L7R1 - Hearts for Respite Summary
A Class Service Project
4th-5th Grade Lopez Elementary School in Fort Collins, Colorado
In 2006, Lopez Elementary chose Respite Care as the recipientof funds they raised through a classserviceprojectthey
named “Hearts for Respite”.
Respite Care, Inc. is a nonprofitorganization in Larimer County that provides short-term carefor children with
developmental disabilities, givingrespiteto parents and enhancingthe quality of lifefor the entire
family.Respite Care believes that a child with a disability is a child first, and his or her chal lenges aresecondary. With this
mission and philosophy in mind,Respite Carestrives to create an interactiveand safeenvironment that meets the
physical and emotional needs of each individual child.
Respite Care was selected for the class serviceprojectbecausethe class had many connections with the organization.
Specifically, oneof the students in the class atthe time had osteogenesisimperfecta (also known as OI or “brittle bone
disease”).Realizingthat he would never be ableto attend a summer camp for “typical”children and knowingthat Respite
Care provided a camp for children with special needs, the class wanted to make it possiblefor him and others likehim to
attend this camp. That is why the funds raised for Respite Careeach year supports their summer camp program, to make
camp affordablefor all of their clients.Additionally,a retired teacher from Lopez Elementary passed away in 2012 and she
had a passion for RespiteCare, so their gift honors her memory.
The Hearts for Respite project is nowan annual tradition atLopez that students, teachers and community members all
enjoy participatingin.
Hearts for Respite Plan
Our Class Service Project
1. Introduce Respite Care to the students. Have the director come with pictures and videos to help the students
understand where the money will be going. Before the actual fundraiser,we arranged for a grant to pay for the school
buses so the students could visitthefacility.Thatway they would be ableto see the facility firsthand and havea true
understandingof why what they were doingwas so important.
2. The teachers decided on two different ways of fundraisingfor this event.
a. Hearts- see the attached flyer that is sent home to all thefamilies.Every student at the school is senthome with a
heart that they can decorate and return with a donation if they want. These hearts decorate the hallwayson the day
of our luncheon. Students arebroken into committees to speak to each classroombefore the hearts go home and
then they collectthe returned hearts from the classrooms thefollowingweek.
b. Luncheon- the students serve lunch on the designated day to the entire staff of the school. All retired teachers
receive an invitation to this event. Businesses thateither have had children attend the school or arelocal businesses
are contacted with letters and phone calls fromthe students to see if they will donatesomething for the event. A
timeline and schedulewill haveto be made to make sure all thefood is provided and picked up the day of the event.
(Look at attached schedule) The staff is then sent “invitations”for the event and asked to donate $10 or whatever
they want for their lunch that day.
3. Additional ideas to make the event successful:
a. Contact local media
b. Find people in the community who are already connected to this nonprofitand encourage them to partner and be
involved in this fundraiser.

Dear Parents, Guardians,and Friends,
Our classisenteringthe serviceproject component of our Philanthropy Study. This involves students creatinga personal
philanthropicmission and then developing a serviceproject that enables them to meet some aspectof his or her mission.
At this point in time, your child has created a team that shares his or her mission and they have begun planninga project.
The intent is thatthis project is as kid led as possible. Some students may plan an event that takes placebeyond school
hours. These projects will notbe facilitated by me and therefore may require your support.I have encouraged your
student to communicate with you about what he or she might need from you to make the event successful.Theend in
mind is for them to discover how EASY itis for a child to be philanthropic. My hope is thatthey’ll see that they have the
skills to changethe world themselves. Along the way, they will learn to write grants, create a “business”plan, and
synergize with classmates to make this event a success.
