The skin on your feet can become dry and cracked due to
loss of sweat.
There may be injuries without pain.

Check your feet every day to see if there is any abnormality.

• Keep your feet in clean water and let them
soak for 20 minutes every morning and
evening
• This will bring moisture into the dry skin.
• Skin will become soft.

• After soaking, gently scrape off hard skin with
rough object, like a stone.
• This removes dead hard skin.
Do not use sharp edged stones because it will
lead to wounds.

4. Oiling
• Apply oil on the feet immediately after
scraping.
• This will keep the moisture within the skin
for a longer period.
• Use only neem oil / Mustard oil / Mabua oil.
Do not use cooking oil. It will attract ants /
insects which will cause wounds.

SELF CARE MEASURE:
5. Dressing
If there is a wound dress the wound daily with any available clean cloth.
• Old cloth at home can be used for this purpose.
• Wash it well and dry it in the sun light before using it.
• Wrap the clean cloth around your foot to keep dirt and flies out of the
wound.
Check your wounds every morning and evening
• If the wounds are becoming smaller, look clean and there is no pus
then you should continue with self care.
• If the wounds are getting bigger or if the skin around wounds is very
red and swollen or if there is any pus you must see a health worker or
Doctor.

Foot drop - Preventive methods from worsening:
If you are not able to move foot up (Foot drop):
Sit with the leg straight
• Use a towel and loop it around the foot (see picture)
• Pull the foot up
• Hold it in this position
• Count to ten
• Push the cloth loop by foot
• Pull the foot up again
• Do it as often as you can and it will become a habit.
This procedure will maintain normal ankle movement.

Correction of deformity by surgery
(Re-Constructive Surgery-RCS)
• Many deformities due to leprosy can be
corrected in specialised hospitals.
• Contact your Medical Officer in the
PHC or District Leprosy Officer (DLO)
• Surgery is done free of cost in
recognised hospitals.

Protective Foot-wear
If you are not able to feel touch and pain in your feet ....
Special footwear is required. Features of this footwear are
• Soft inside (Micro-Cellular Rubber (MCR)
• hard soles
• adjustable soft straps
• back-strap
• no nails
 Check shoes daily to see if there is any damage and
sharp things like small stones in the soft sole.
 Don't wear tight footwear.

Dressing If there is a wound dress the wound daily with any available clean cloth. • Old cloth at home can be used for this purpose. • Wash it well and dry it in the sun light before using it. • Wrap the clean cloth around your foot to keep dirt and flies out of the wound.   • 15. 28 Foot drop - Preventive methods from worsening: If you are not able to move foot up (Foot drop): Sit with the leg straight • Use a towel and loop it around the foot (see picture) • Pull the foot up • Hold it in this position • Count to ten • Push the cloth loop by foot • Pull the foot up again • Do it as often as you can and it will become a habit.
