We all have been long enough in the IT industry to understand that the Software Development Life Cycle has come a long way from operating in the sequential and silo-ed Waterfall model to being Agile and collaborative. To be able to cut down the time-to-market and optimize costs, the evolution of the Waterfall software development processes was necessary, giving birth to the new ways of working with extensive adoption of Agile and DevOps. The topic DevOps – Best Practices in the Agile world’ which is a vast subject and I have endeavored to put together the content covering most of the aspects of DevOps with a certain level of depth; which I observed, implemented, learned during working in various organizations including the research of my own. AFITC 2018 - Using Process Maturity and Agile to Strengthen Cyber Security
The premise of this innovative development effort is that the merging of process maturity (>CMMI 3) and agile DevSecOps can contribute to cyber hardness/resiliency without sacrificing responsiveness, capability and quality. The target of this case study was a federal agency that required increased feature delivery rates to better meet the demand for system updates (to include existing cyber threats), low production defect density and vulnerability forecasting/minimization. Using Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to model the entire Agile process provided a holistic approach to capturing and depicting the sprint lifecycle. The model accounted for the lifecycle including development of user stories, design, development and test within individual sprints. The payoff was a twenty percent increase in user stories per release than originally planned and a production defect density of only three percent. This approach may be applied to improve the security posture of the Air Force systems as they are being built.
