Destroyer to Warrior
An Idea of change
Dr. Paul W Dyer Grandmaster

For many years now, there has been, and always seems to be the question of, “Is a martial
artist a Destroyer or a Warrior”? Is a martial artist a killer or a person of peace? If a
person can hurt and kill people, how can it be for peace and love? How can it be for life?

In times of the past, through all stages of development of the planet and the universe,
there has always been a balance of a yin and yang. An environment that is trying to live
in a cohesive manner that is in sync with each other. There were the weak, the strong, the
prepared, the unprepared, the abused, and misused. Then there were protectors who
answered the call from the universe. The call, to balance the outer self and the inner self,
to give their being the help to save, teach, and understand. The call to do the things that
no one could or would do. These are the Warriors.

So now let me explain the transformation from Destroyer to Warrior. We are always
learning in our early stages of development. We don’t start out as scholars, nor do we
start out as the village idiot. When things are done or tasks have been performed, it can
be misunderstood as either the idiot (Destroyer) or scholar (Warrior). It only matters
when you preformed the task, and at what age of your development you are in. If it is in
the early part of your education and things get messed up, you will be known as the
village idiot or Destroyer. And if it is done in the latter years of your development it
could be considered a marvel of intelligence and a genius, you are a Warrior.

Well, as martial artists, we are the same as young students learning the art. All young
martial artists are Destroyers because their education is rough and archaic, and it could
destroy the lives of others, and the life of one self. This is why a teacher and time are
most important when learning your trade of choice. A Warrior is of peace and life. A
person who practices his trade to perfection and precision, is a Warrior. Warriors have
been used to defend faith, the weak, and the environment from being destroyed by the
evil of hate and prejudice. Warriors were used to spread words of joy and to carry the
message of love in trouble times and areas of distress, to protect its safety, to protect its
honor, to protect its integrity.

We all have the ability to be a Warrior, but first we must study and train very hard in our
field so we don’t destroy ourselves and others. Through patience and practice we are
Warriors within. There have been many Warriors in our time, like Martin Luther King,
Gandhi, Dali Lama, Jesus Christ, Socrates and many more who have taught and passed
on this message. Because Warriors were used in history as combat soldiers, the term was
misused or just misunderstood. The Warrior was given words and passions by people
who manipulated them into performing on the behalf of evil, and they were betrayed by
their love and used because of it. This is a separate issue and situation, but not a
Warrior’s fault.
