What are Values?
Values are the basic convictions an
individual has. Values result in a specific
mode of conduct which contributes to
one’s desired end state of existence.
How are one’s values
established?
Values: Biology
A significant portion of the values we
hold is established in our early years –
from parents, teachers, friends and
others.

Values
Values have Long term Influence
Values have Influence
Values lay the foundation for the
understanding of attitudes and stimulus
because they influence one’s perception
and behavior.
Values have Longevity
The process of questioning our values
results in change, but more often
reinforces the values we hold.
Values take Precedence over Trend
They are generally not fluid and flexible.
They tend to be relatively stable and
enduring.
Why is it important for designers to
understand consumers’ values?
It helps designers work backwards.
And be able to determine an
individual’s background by observing
the values they display and vice
versa.
It also helps designers work
forwards. It can be a valuable aid in
explaining and predicting behavior
For Example/Case Studies
Individuals’ values differ but tend to
reflect the societal values of the
period in which they grew up.

Personality determines Reaction
Why is it important for designers to
understand consumers’
personalities?
When you understand why people
react the way they do, you are able
to determine what they will react to
and design along those lines.
Understanding Personality
- determines ones needs and
triggers.
Projecting Personality
- attracts like minded individuals
These like minded individuals can be
grouped together and form what
you call your Target Audience.
First steps of the Design Process
Identify the target audience.
Understand how different.
personalities react within different
situations.
Determine the factors that cause
them to react that way.
Understanding why people react
the way they do.
Means understanding
what exerts pressure on people.
Factors that exert pressure on our
Personality
- Culture (norms, attitudes, values
passed down)
- Early Conditioning
- Norms amongst family
- Friends and Social Groups

What is a Trend?
Trends are dominant and prevailing
mindsets or habits in society over a
particular period of time.
A general tendency or inclination.
Trends shift and do not remain
stationary over time or place.

Trends have Short term Influence
Why is it important for designers to
take into consideration current
trends?
Trends reflect what people are
thinking on a daily basis.
Trends reflect short term needs
and current interest.
What is Competition?
Your Competition are ones that
service similar primary needs.
Competition results in Comparison.
For Eg; Google is Yahoo’s direct
Competition.

Competition
Competition affects
viability/stability
Competition pushes you to
differentiate.
Competitive differentiation helps
you stay on top.
It helps designers work against type.
It encourages tactility and problem
solving.
Design is essentially the process of
designing a solution for a problem.
How do I design something that
has longevity?
Find a balance between

Short term

Competition
This Balance helps designers
understand needs and create
something people can relate to.
Something people want. And
something that improves their lives.
