Fight for Peace was founded in 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to offer disadvantaged youth an alternative to gang violence through boxing and martial arts training combined with education. It has since expanded to London and plans to partner with organizations in other countries. LUTA is a social enterprise that was created to support Fight for Peace through apparel sales, with 50% of profits going to the charity. LUTA develops clothing in collaboration with fighters and designers from the favelas to represent the strength needed to overcome adversity.

Initial results showed bike theft decreased while cycling increased from 2005-2006.

- 2. In 2000, in the favela of Complexo da Maré in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a small boxing club called Luta Pela Paz (Fight for Peace) was founded. Like most favela communities, Maré is divided by heavily armed drug factions and residents are plagued by daily gun violence, social exclusion and economic hardship. Fight for Peace (FFP) offered a “way out” for young people who wanted a different future. Over time this small boxing club has grown into a multi-combat sport and education Academy, creating champions both in and out of the ring. In 2007 Fight for Peace opened a second Academy in North Woolwich, East London. During 2011, Fight for Peace will be training partner organisations to run Fight for Peace programmes in Colombia, Uganda, Los Angeles and Canada. LUTA is a social enterprise, committed to sharing its profits with Fight for Peace International, a global charity that promotes the use of boxing and martial arts training combined with education and personal development programmes to help young people in communities that experience crime and violence. LUTA is born of Real Strength and that means recognising and supporting those young people who overcome adversity to become champions both in and out of the ring. LUTA was created by the founder of Fight for Peace, and after ten years of working in the favela, he wants to keep supporting young people growing up in communities that experience crime and violence. - 4. Working with the Socially Responsive Design Hub at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Vexed Design, LUTA have developed and integrated a co-design process into their business. Fightwear and trainingwear are developed and tested in collaboration with LUTA Ambassadors, champion fighters that give their time to support the activities of Fight for Peace. Lifestyle clothing is co-designed with young designers from the favelas of Rio. Both these groups contribute their expertise to develop original apparel that represents ‘real strength’. The ‘real strength’ needed to never quit in the face of adversity. To put in the hours and stand tall despite the hardships that the favela can hold.
