- 2. Background ■ Maggie Tulliver is the protagonist of : “The Mill on the Floss”. ■ She was clever & impetuous child. ■ She had a great concern for others & their feelings. ■ She was intelligent & attracted to books and proud of this knowledge.
- 3. Maggie ■ Maggie remembered her childhood fondly but there years were depicted as painful ones. ■ She had too many feelings for the memories of the past. ■ Maggie loved her brother Tom so much & he was the emotional center of Maggie’s life.

- 5. Stephen ■ He was handsome charming and a wealthy man. ■ Stephen is Mr. Guest of Guest & Co’s only son. ■ He was engaged to Lucy, who he thinks will be a charming wife.
- 6. Stephen ■ When he meets Maggie, however he is overcome and quickly falls in love with her. ■ At first, he tries to deny his feelings for her. ■ But later he started trying to persuade her to marry him. ■ After Maggie’s death he married to Lucy.
- 7. Relationship ■ Stephen and Philip both were the love interests of her in the novel. ■ Maggie’s relationship with Philip was based on friendship. ■ On the other hand, Stephen had more attractive relationship with her.
