The purpose of this case study is to discuss the potential implications the UEFA Financial Fair Play regulation might have on the European football and in particular on the Italian football industry.
In the first part the European football scenario is introduced by making reference to some representative cases that show some of the issues the regulation should deal with. The main objectives and challenges of the regulation are presented as well.
In the second part some academics models are discussed in order to show the characteristics of salary caps. It is argued that the rationale behind salary caps is pretty similar to the break-even requirement one.
The implications of the regulation are presented by showing the advantages and disadvantages of salary caps in pursuing the increase of competitive balance in the European football leagues.
In the third part the research method is presented together with the research design followed for the case study. The reasons are discussed why the Italian football would be an appropriate example to assess the actual implication of the new UEFA regulation.
In the fourth part the current situation of the Italian football industry is analysed and compared to the European top leagues.
In the fifth part the opinions of some top managers of Italian football industry are presented regarding the Financial Fair Play Regulation and its implications in the European landscape, particularly in the Italian football industry.
