JAGHIRE EMPLOYER SHOWCASE
SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
he IUPUI Office of Student Employment selects on-
and off-campus employers every month that have
submitted a JagHire for a JagHire Showcase.
The showcase consists of a site visit to gather
information on your department or organization, your
unique student employment opportunities, and the
contributions of your student employees. This month
we are highlighting the School of Dentistry.
Student Perspective | Chloe Graves
Explain what you do in your position:
I work with a lot of Excel and spreadsheets, filing,
financial monthly statements and other tasks as
needed.
What stood out the most? The fact that it was a
Work-Study position and that it was on-campus; I
know that it’s easier to work on-campus with my
classes. And it’s easy because having a work-study
(or on-campus position) the employer is also more
willing to work with your class schedule more than
jobs off-campus.
What’s a typical day like? A typical day, I go and
get the mail and make sure that if Kay (Supervisor)
needs anything done and I do that first. After I have
completed my tasks, I ask others I work with if they
need help with other jobs as well. I usually have a
long term project that will last a couple of months
that I work on if no one else needs help with
anything.
What do you like the most about your position?
The flexibility is really nice and the people I work
with are great so it makes the work day a lot easier,
just having great people to work with. Kay is the
best boss that I could ask for, so it’s been really
nice.
What makes her the best boss? She is very
understanding. I’ve had days where I have to call in
or can’t come because of a big exam or just
personal things and she is always understanding
with that and willing to help if she can in any way.
She is really good with instructions, if I’m not sure
what I should be doing with a project, it’s easy to go
back and ask questions.
How is this job shaping your experience for
what you want to do? I wasn’t sure how much I
could use from it because I want to be a computer
engineer, but I know I have learned the basic skills
of an office setting and how to work with people.
How to prioritize and manage my time well, so I can
get everything done in the day. The position has
helped me a lot and continues to!

SCHOOL OF
DENTISTRY
Supervisor Perspective | Kaylene Rossok
What skills did you see in her that you would like
to see in other students you might hire in the
future? Being a people person, being self-motivated
is important. Not being worried or scared about asking
questions as well. We realize that many projects we
assigned her, she would complete faster than other
staff would. There is a difference between just getting
it done and getting it done correctly and she does that.
She has presented herself professionally and has
done so every day.
What advice would you give to other supervisors
who want to take on a mentor role like you have
with Chloe? I would advise them to get to know your
student worker. Also, emphasize as a supervisor that
their education comes FIRST. They are here to get an
education and they are doing YOU a massive favor by
working for you. You are not doing them a favor for
hiring them, it’s the other way around. We set up the
expectations of them and what they set up up
expectations for us as well.
As you find things they can utilize in their education
and experience, try to give them things to do that will
help them grow. Setup expectations, what they expect
from the positions at the very beginning.
Describe a day WITHOUT students working:
For one thing, it’s a JOY to have her here. I enjoy
working with Chloe. My job would be much more
difficult because I wouldn’t have time to do all of these
things. A day when she is not here, we can tell,
because people will ask “When is Chloe coming in!?”
What do you enjoy most about being a
supervisor? It’s a joy to watch her as she develops
and grows while in school. I always encourage her to
put experiences on her resume. If it’s not something
she can specifically list on the resume, we still try to
see how we can develop her as much as we can.
“As an employee, I think students
should understand that when looking
for a job on-campus, know that they
want to be a mentor to you. I think I
get a lot more “care” here than I
would from any other place.”
“We want to get her in more professional
development, like your Excellence in
Professionalism [program],
because that is something that not only
will our department benefit from, but it
will really help her as she prepares to
graduate.”
