This study evaluated the effectiveness of applying chlorhexidine chips (PerioC) multiple times over 6 months compared to placebo chips (MatrixC) for treating peri-implantitis. Sixty patients with peri-implantitis affecting 77 implants were randomly assigned to receive either PerioC or MatrixC applied every 2 weeks along with implant debridement. Probing depth reduction and clinical attachment level gains were significantly greater in the PerioC group compared to the MatrixC group. Both groups experienced a reduction in bleeding on probing. The study suggests frequent application of PerioC may be an effective adjunctive treatment for peri-implantitis.
This meta-analysis evaluates the reliability of published evidence on regenerative endodontic procedures. It summarizes clinical and radiographic findings from studies on treating non-vital immature permanent teeth using regenerative techniques. The analysis finds good success rates for tooth survival and pathology resolution, but variable results for outcomes like apex closure and root development. Regenerative procedures are improving but factors important for success remain unclear, indicating more research is needed.
Comparative Effects of Chewing Gums in Oral Health: An Original ResearchDrHeena tiwari
This study assessed the effects of sugar-free chewing gum on oral health by comparing plaque index and DMFT scores between patients who chewed gum daily versus a control group. Forty patients were divided into two groups - one using sugar-free gum for 20 minutes daily and a control group. Plaque index and DMFT scores were assessed monthly for both groups. The gum group showed significantly lower plaque accumulation and fewer caries incidents compared to the control group after two months. However, the benefits decreased after longer use, possibly due to decreased compliance. The study concluded that sugar-free gum can improve oral health when used regularly as an adjunct to brushing and flossing by stimulating saliva and reducing plaque and caries risk.
EFFICACY OF FIXED VERSUS REMOVAL RETAINER POST ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: A COMP...DrHeena tiwari
This study compared the efficacy of fixed versus removable retainers for maintaining orthodontic treatment outcomes over 4 years. 48 participants from an original randomized controlled trial were evaluated. Those with fixed retainers had lower irregularity scores on average (0.85mm increase) compared to removable retainers (1.47mm increase). After adjusting for confounding factors, the difference in irregularity between groups was statistically significant, with removable retainers having 1.64mm more irregularity on average. No other significant differences were found between groups for other metrics like inter-canine width. Compliance with removable retainers decreased over time. Fixed retainers maintained their position better, though some required repair. In conclusion, fixed retainers appeared to

Impact of Drains on the Postoperative Sequel Following Third Molar Surgery: A...DrHeena tiwari
This document summarizes a study that assessed the impact of rubber drains on postoperative outcomes following third molar surgery. The study involved 60 patients who underwent bilateral third molar removal, with a drain placed on one side but not the other. Parameters like pain, swelling, trismus and infections were evaluated and compared between sides. The results found no significant differences between sides in any parameter, suggesting drains do not provide benefits. While some past studies found drains reduced sequelae, this study's findings did not support positive effects of drains on postoperative recovery from third molar surgery.
EFFICACY OF TRANSDERMAL PATCHES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF POSTOPERATIVE PAIN: AN O...DrHeena tiwari
This study compared the efficacy of a single 100mg transdermal diclofenac patch to a single 75mg intramuscular diclofenac injection for managing postoperative pain in 30 patients who underwent maxillofacial surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the patch or injection. Pain levels were assessed at various timepoints using a visual analogue scale. The results found that the patch provided longer lasting analgesia (15 hours on average) compared to the injection (9 hours), and fewer patients in the patch group required rescue pain medication. No local complications occurred with the patch. The study concluded that a single diclofenac patch was more effective than intramuscular diclofenac for managing immediate postoperative pain
Malocclusion And Deleterious Oral Habits In South Indian Adolscent Population...DrHeena tiwari
This study evaluated the prevalence of malocclusion and associated oral habits in South Indian adolescents. The researchers assessed 1000 12-15 year olds using the Dental Aesthetic Index and found that 52% had some form of malocclusion. Deleterious oral habits were present in 21.2% of subjects and those with habits were more likely to have malocclusion than those without. Specific habits like tongue thrusting and mouth breathing were correlated with traits like crowding and open bite. The study concludes that malocclusion in this population is directly linked to the presence of oral habits.
Effectiveness of Low-Level Lasers in the Management of Recurrent Aphthous Sto...DrHeena tiwari
This study assessed the effectiveness of low-level lasers in treating recurrent aphthous stomatitis. 30 subjects with minor, major, or herpetiform aphthae were treated with lasers and their pain was evaluated using VAS scores. For all groups, pain was significantly less after 24 hours and further reduced at 72 hours compared to pre-treatment levels. At 1 week, pain scores were minimal or zero. The results demonstrated that low-level lasers provide effective pain relief and accelerated healing for recurrent aphthous stomatitis lesions.
This systematic review compares the success rates of Endosequence bioceramic root repair material (BCRRM), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and calcium hydroxide for apexification of necrotic immature permanent teeth. 9 studies met the inclusion criteria for review. The studies found that all three materials had similar success rates in terms of clinical symptoms. However, MTA and Endosequence BCRRM formed the apical barrier faster and allowed for single visit treatment, making them superior to calcium hydroxide which took 5-20 months. Further research is needed directly comparing MTA and Endosequence BCRRM.
This randomized clinical trial compared the survival of composite resin restorations and metal-ceramic crowns on endodontically treated teeth over a follow-up period of 1 to 5 years. 57 restorations were placed in 47 patients, with 30 being composite resin and 27 being metal-ceramic crowns. One tooth was extracted in the composite group due to root fracture. There were 8 failures in the composite group and 1 failure in the crown group, mostly due to secondary caries or restoration fracture. Metal-ceramic crowns demonstrated better clinical performance and lower need for re-intervention, but both types of restorations showed good survival rates with no significant difference.
This review paper analyzed 1300 publications in the Journal of Maxillofacial Oral Surgery from 2009 to 2020 to evaluate trends in levels of evidence. The analysis found that case reports and narrative reviews with a level D evidence accounted for 36% of publications. The majority (35%) of articles fell under maxillofacial pathology. The percentage of higher levels of evidence (A and B) increased from 2.09% in 2009/2010 to 12.74% in 2019/2020, indicating improving research quality over time. Categorizing publications by level of evidence and topic can help refine research quality in the journal going forward.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined 28 nationally representative surveys from 13 countries on COVID-19 vaccination intentions. The key findings were:
1) Pooled data from March-October found 60% of people anticipated vaccinating and 20% expected to refuse vaccination, with 22% uncertain.
2) Vaccination intentions have declined over time as the pandemic has evolved, while refusal intentions have increased.
3) Demographic factors like being female, younger, lower income/education, and belonging to an ethnic minority were consistently associated with being less likely to intend to vaccinate.
Effectiveness of Low-Level Lasers subsequent to Third Molar Surgery: An Origi...DrHeena tiwari
This study assessed the effectiveness of low-level lasers in reducing postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus following third molar surgery. 32 patients who required bilateral lower wisdom tooth removal were treated, with one side receiving laser treatment and the other serving as the control. Pain was significantly lower on the laser treated side on days 6-7, though swelling and trismus did not significantly differ between sides. The results suggest low-level lasers may help reduce pain following third molar surgery when applied immediately after surgery.

This randomized controlled trial compared the Hall Technique (sealing caries under pre-formed metal crowns without caries removal) to general dental practitioners' standard restorations for managing caries in primary molars. Over 5 years of follow-up, the Hall Technique had significantly lower failure rates than standard restorations. Of 91 patients with minimum 48-month follow-up, 3 had failures of Hall Technique restorations compared to 15 failures of standard restorations. The study concluded that the Hall Technique is a more effective long-term and predictable option for managing caries in primary molars compared to standard restorations.
Assessment of correlation of periodontitis in teeth adjacent to implant and p...Dr. Anuj S Parihar
Aims: The present study was conducted to determine correlation between peri‑implantitis and periodontitis in adjacent teeth. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 58 patients with 84 dental implants. They were divided into two groups, group I (50) was with peri‑implantitis and group II (34) was without it. In all patients, probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) was calculated around implant, adjacent to implant and on contralateral side. Obtained data were statistically analyzed using statistical software IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp with one‑way analysis of variance. Results: Males were 30 with 52 dental implants and females were 28 with 32 dental implants. CAL was 5.82 ± 0.52 in group I and 3.62 ± 0.63 in group II (P = 0.001) around implants. PD was 4.28 ± 1.26 in group I and 2.20 ± 0.52
in group II around adjacent teeth (P = 0.002). PD around contralateral teeth was significant (P = 0.05) in group I (3.18 ± 1.01) and group II (2.71 ± 0.73). Conclusion: Periodontitis has negative effect on implant success. Teeth adjacent to dental implant plays an important role in deciding the success or failure of implant. Maintenance of periodontal health is of paramount importance for successful implant therapy.
Epidemiology of Orofacial Pain in Population of Jammu City in India: An Origi...DrHeena tiwari
This study evaluated the etiology of orofacial pain among 400 patients visiting private clinics in Jammu, India. The results showed that dental caries leading to pulpitis was the most common cause of orofacial pain, affecting 96 patients. Periodontal disease and tooth sensitivity were also significant causes. Orofacial pain was more prevalent in females aged 26-35 years. The pain most commonly worsened during sleep and evenings and lasted less than 1 hour for many subjects. This study concluded that dental caries is the primary etiology of orofacial pain in this population and treatment should be tailored based on the identified cause.

Longevity of teeth and implants a systematic reviewdroliv
SUMMARY
This systematic review analyzed 11 publications on teeth with 3,015 subjects and follow-up periods ranging from 10-30 years. The incidence of tooth loss was 1.3-5% in most studies but 14-20% in two studies of rural Chinese populations. The percentage of subjects experiencing tooth loss varied from 25-75%, highest in Chinese populations and untreated periodontitis patients. Bone loss appeared small (<1mm) in well-maintained patients. Nine implant studies with 476 subjects and follow-up up to 20 years found implant loss varied between 1-18%. Bone loss around implants was 0.7-1.3mm in most studies. Comparisons of longevity are difficult due to heterogeneity.
This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and properties of periodontal ligament progenitor cells (PDLPs) for the treatment of periodontitis. Three patients with intrabony periodontal defects were treated by transplantation of autologous PDLPs cultured on a bone graft material. Clinical measurements over 32-72 months showed reduced probing depths and clinical attachment gains, indicating potential therapeutic benefits. In vitro analysis found that PDLPs showed characteristics similar to periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), including proliferation, mesenchymal surface marker expression, and multipotent differentiation, but lacked expression of the tendon marker scleraxis. This provides preliminary evidence that PDLP transplantation may be an effective and safe approach for periodontitis
This study assessed the 5-year outcome of apical microsurgery in 170 teeth from 191 subjects who underwent the procedure. At the 5-year follow-up, 129 teeth (75.9%) were healed compared to 83.8% at 1 year. Two significant predictors of healing outcome were identified: teeth with interproximal bone loss >3 mm from the cementoenamel junction had a lower healing rate (52.9%) compared to those with ≤3 mm bone loss (78.2%); and teeth filled with ProRoot MTA had a higher healing rate (86.4%) than those filled with SuperEBA (67.3%).

This document summarizes a review of literature on patient-related risk factors for dental implant therapy. The review identified 43 relevant studies based on inclusion criteria. The studies contained confounding variables and small sample sizes in subgroups. Consistent evidence showed increased implant failure rates in smokers, patients with a history of radiotherapy, and those with poor local bone quality or quantity. Weaker evidence linked a history of periodontitis to higher peri-implant disease. A lack of evidence precluded guidelines for patients with autoimmune disorders. Emerging evidence suggests a correlation between genetic traits and disrupted osseointegration.
This study evaluated the 5-year clinical and radiographic outcomes of treating infrabony periodontal defects with human cultured periosteum (HCP) sheets in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hydroxyapatite granules. Twenty-two patients received regenerative treatment and supportive periodontal therapy over 5 years. Results showed a mean pocket depth reduction of 4.7 mm, clinical attachment level gain of 3.5 mm, and reduction in infrabony defect depth of 4.5 mm. Strict compliance to supportive therapy was important for maintaining outcomes. The addition of HCP sheets to PRP and grafts provided osteogenic cells and growth factors that enhanced periodontal regeneration over 5 years.
Short-term improvement of clinical parameters and microbial diversity in peri...M ALTAMIMI
Indocyanine green-based antimicrobial photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to scaling and root planing resulted in significantly greater reductions in periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment loss compared to scaling and root planing alone. Microbiome analysis showed a reduction in key periodontal pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and favorable shifts in the subgingival microbiome with the addition of photodynamic therapy. The combination treatment led to significantly greater short-term clinical improvements and microbial changes associated with periodontal healing.
This study compared the effectiveness of Hawley retainers and two protocols for vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) in maintaining orthodontic treatment results. 90 patients were randomly assigned to receive either a Hawley retainer, VFRs worn for 4 months full-time then nightly, or VFRs worn for 1 week full-time then nightly. Models at debond and 4 and 8 months post-treatment showed the Hawley group had significantly greater loss of upper arch length and increased crowding compared to the VFR groups, though lower arch measurements were similar. Both VFR protocols were more effective than Hawleys in maintaining the upper arch, and 4 months full-time wear provided better lower incis
The use of low level laser in periodontal diseaseJan Tunér
This study investigated the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. 16 patients received SRP on one side of their mouth and SRP plus 10 sessions of LLLT on the other side. Sites treated with SRP plus LLLT showed greater reductions in pocket depth at 5 weeks and 3 months compared to SRP alone. SRP plus LLLT sites also had a statistically significant increase in mean radiographic bone density from baseline to 12 months. However, LLLT did not significantly affect gingival index, plaque index, or levels of the inflammatory marker IL-1β in gingival crevicular fluid

The document discusses the stability of open bite treatment. It finds that:
1) Relatively few scientific studies have evaluated the stability of open bite treatment. The studies that do exist show that 35-60% of non-surgically treated patients experience a relapse of their open bite.
2) Various therapies have been proposed to improve stability, such as crib therapy and myofunctional therapy, but no long-term studies conclusively prove their effectiveness.
3) While early treatment is generally indicated for open bites depending on severity, age, etc., stability remains a clinical problem as about 20-40% of patients, both surgically and non-surgically treated, will experience a relapse.
Managements of medication-induced gingival hyperplasia (2).pptxMohammadEissaAhmadi
1) Multiple studies evaluated non-surgical treatment options for medication-induced gingival hyperplasia (MIGH) including scaling and root planing, oral hygiene instructions, and various antimicrobial therapies.
2) Some studies found improvements in gingival inflammation and reductions in gingival tissue volume with nonsurgical periodontal treatment alone, while others saw limited or no effect.
3) The efficacy of systemic or locally delivered azithromycin and metronidazole was inconsistent between studies, with some demonstrating short-term reductions in gingival enlargement but not complete resolution of MIGH.
Managements of medication-induced gingival hyperplasia 4.pptxMohammadEissaAhmadi
This document summarizes a systematic review of treatment options for medication-induced gingival hyperplasia (MIGH). The review included 22 studies published between 1988-2017. The studies evaluated non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing, oral hygiene instructions, and antimicrobial mouthwashes/gels. Surgical resection was used for severe cases. Most studies found that non-surgical treatments combined with strict oral hygiene helped reduce gingival inflammation and size. However, recurrence was still reported in some cases requiring additional treatment.
This case series examines a new surgical technique for regenerating interimplant papillae using subepithelial connective tissue grafts. 10 patients with missing papillae between implant restorations received the new procedure involving buccal and palatal incisions made away from the papilla to preserve blood supply, and tunneling performed with a specialized instrument. The papillae scores improved on average from 0.8 to 2.4 after 16 months, demonstrating regeneration of the papillae over 11-30 months. However, long-term studies are still needed to validate the technique and outcomes.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of pentoxifylline versus placebo in treating oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). 75 patients with OSF were divided into two groups - group A received placebo and group B received 400 mg of pentoxifylline daily for 7 months. Improvement was measured using symptom and sign scores. Group B showed significantly greater improvement in total scores compared to group A, indicating pentoxifylline was more effective at reducing symptoms and improving mouth opening. Pentoxifylline may help OSF by improving microcirculation and reducing inflammation. The study demonstrates pentoxifylline is superior to placebo for OSF treatment.
This study evaluated the clinical and radiographic outcomes of diode laser pulpotomy compared to formocresol pulpotomy in human primary teeth. A total of 40 teeth in 14 children were randomly assigned to receive either diode laser pulpotomy or formocresol pulpotomy. At 6-month and 12-month follow-ups, both treatments showed high clinical success rates of 100%, but the diode laser group had slightly lower radiographic success rates of 95% at 6 months and 90% at 12 months compared to 100% for the formocresol group. However, the differences in success rates between the two treatments were not statistically significant. This study suggests that diode laser pulpotomy may be an effective alternative to traditional formoc
Long term clinical and bacterial effetcx of xylitol on paitnets with fixed or...EdwardHAngle
Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term clinical and bacterial effects of using 6 g of
xylitol per day for 3 months on patients with full fixed orthodontic appliances.
Methods: The study was a pilot clinical trial that included 41 subjects who were undergoing orthodontic
treatment. The subjects were randomly divided into three groups. Group A received xylitol chewing gum, group B
received xylitol dissolvable chewable tablets, and Group C served as the control group and did not receive xylitol
gums or tablets. Clinical examination and the collection of plaque and saliva samples were carried out at baseline
and 3, 6, and 12 months. All three groups were given oral hygiene instruction and were put on a 6-month cleaning
and topical fluoride schedule. Plaque scores and bacterial counts were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the
different approaches at reducing the caries risk.
Results: Xylitol groups did not experience any more reduction in plaque score, plaque MS counts, or salivary MS
counts than the control group nor did they have lower values at any of the time points. Chewing gum did not
significantly increase the incidence of debonded brackets over the other groups.
Conclusions: Xylitol does not have a clinical or bacterial benefit in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Oral
hygiene instructions and 6-month topical fluoride application were effective at reducing plaque scores and bacterial
counts in patients with full fixed appliances regardless of whether or not xylitol was used.
This study examined 17 cases of temporomandibular joint ankylosis treated at a tertiary hospital in India between 2017-2018. The results found that females were more affected than males, with the highest number of cases occurring in patients aged 7-14 years old. Bilateral ankylosis was more common than unilateral. The majority of patients presented with intracapsular ankylosis. Various surgical treatments were used, with coronoidectomy combined with interpositional arthroplasty using a costochondral graft and physiotherapy being the most common approach. All 17 patients received treatment and were undergoing follow up care. The study aims to better understand patterns of TMJ ankylosis in the region in order to

The facial nerve, also known as cranial nerve VII, is one of the 12 cranial nerves originating from the brain. It's a mixed nerve, meaning it contains both sensory and motor fibres, and it plays a crucial role in controlling various facial muscles, as well as conveying sensory information from the taste buds on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
