Pinyin is a system for transcribing the Mandarin Chinese language using Roman letters. It was developed in China in the 1950s to provide a way to teach pronunciation of Chinese characters to children and adults. Pinyin uses letters of the Latin alphabet to represent the sounds of Mandarin Chinese, and it has become the dominant system for romanization of Chinese in mainland China and Taiwan.
