The document discusses strategies for developing metadata and taxonomies. It recommends starting the process early in web development by gathering information during the concept phase and using real data in wireframes. During the design phase, the actual data is prototyped and details are completed. Guidelines are provided for content creation and metadata maintenance. The document reviews various tools for building taxonomies, brainstorming concepts, developing ontologies, and visualizing data relationships, noting advantages and drawbacks of each type.
This document discusses design basics for the web, including layout, color, typography, and design as it relates to Drupal. It defines design and explains how it differs from art. It covers layout fundamentals like wireframes and grids and why grids are useful. Typography basics like font selection, sizing, and hierarchy are outlined. Color consistency and defined palettes are noted as important. Potential pitfalls for web design like non-web safe fonts and lack of communication with developers are also mentioned. Finally, online tools for design, color, grids, type, and more are showcased.
The document discusses various perspectives on the purpose and definition of art. It presents quotes that define art as self-expression, imitation of nature or reality, and a way to evoke emotion. The document also considers whether art's purpose is to teach moral lessons by broadening human experience. It questions whether certain theories provide a complete definition of art's purpose and prompts reflection on how art has impacted viewers emotionally or in shaping moral outlooks.
In this section of Unification Thought a theory of art is considered. Culture defines the totality of human activities and Art is placed at the center of these cultural activities as the essence of such proceedings. However, the theory of art also reveals concerns over tendencies towards decadent expressions of what might otherwise be ideals; these serving humanity in a positive, ethical and affirmative way. World culture may therefore face a serious crises if this negative tendency persists. Accordingly, it is reasoned, a new culture and a true art movement might be both advantageous and relevant for our times.
Through human history the arts have frequently played a leading role in bringing about change. The Renaissance period is a clear example of this, where the arts heralded a systemic change in this cultural epoch. Yet, art supplied a more questionable contribution to the Russian Revolution, thus in the revolutionary period the arts formed as a style known as Social Realism. This throws in to question, what the term art, might mean. For the most part, Social Realism became the instrument of a materialistic dialectic, serving the state rather than a principle of inspirational and autonomous creativity.
The function and the purpose of the arts are therefore examined here in this light and a counterproposal to social realism is presented. Believing the future will more and more, move towards a profound and universal expression of the arts, it is more pressing than ever to present a new theory of art from the viewpoint of transcendent and immanent perspectives; something Unification Thought suggests, belongs to a philosophy of religion rather than a state orchestrated doctrine.

This presentation is intended to be a tool for art educators to use when presenting the purposes of visual art. The presentation requires the instructor to explain each purpose then manage discussion after each image.
The document provides an introduction to visual art, defining it as the use of skill and imagination to create aesthetic objects or experiences that can be shared. It examines how art is perceived and classified, exploring elements like style, composition, and seeing. Key terms related to art are defined, and the purposes and importance of art are discussed, including how it can create beauty, enhance environments, influence society, and express beliefs, fantasy, protest, and more. Art is analyzed using components, elements, principles of design, and underlying concepts.

The document discusses challenges in designing, developing, and deploying Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). It outlines the methodology used, which included studying RIAs through online resources and hands-on experience with tools. Issues addressed include choosing technologies, cross-browser compatibility, and handling deployment. Potential solutions explored using Adobe Flex, AJAX, Microsoft Silverlight, and evaluating each for the specific application requirements. The conclusion recommends RIAs for applications like catalogs and making recommendations for designing RIAs.
In this session Simon will share his considerable experience of managing projects; from the initial client meetings to getting sign-off on designs to finally going live, and all that comes inbetween.

Tools for Entrepreneurs: Create. Collaborate. Communicate.Sara Rosso
I created this presentation for entrepreneurs who need online tools to make their ideas happen (I gave it earlier this year at the Professional Women's Association in Milan).
The presentation "Tools for Entrepreneurs: Create. Collaborate. Communicate." started out as a way to explain very technical things to non-technical people, but I quickly realized that most people when approaching technology get intimidated by the "What's DNS? Do I need a dedicated server?" kind of questions and therefore feel they can't understand technology.
I feel that this technology intimidation is really due to the fact that they don't really own their idea, and better understanding it will guide any decisions they have to make with their idea moving forward.
So I focus on how to further refine your idea so you can move it forward, even with help, by having a better mastery over what you need and what your users need. I also cover some techniques and tools for collaborating with developers, external consultants, and other remote workers. Then, I briefly touch on communication strategies online and how your site won't be the only place communication happens but it should be the digital hub with the most useful and authoritative information about your company, and how you can develop a communication strategy that spans several types of networks.
The appendix includes some open source software alternatives for growing a business on a bootstrap budget.
Running Great Design Reviews With Clients & PartnersCraig Peters
No matter how great your designs are, the way you communicate with your clients/business partners can make or break your engagement, especially as design challenges and organizations become more complex.
But what actually makes some meetings go well, and others not? We’ve heard “Be storytellers,” “Provide the right context,” and “Set expectations,” but what does that look like in practice?
I’ll provide real-life examples of how we’ve done this in our presentations for client engagements. We’ll include examples of our fundamental concepts we live by. No surprises. Over-communicate. Tell them how to be and what to do in the meeting. Design every slide of a presentation, not just the “designs.” Tell a story. Assume your clients have no idea what your meeting is all about (put yourself in their shoes).
It always goes better when you’re well prepared; we’ll help you get there.

Part 2 - Everything You Need To Know About SharePoint Social Capabilities - B...Richard Harbridge
The document discusses strategies for implementing social capabilities in SharePoint, including mapping social features to business objectives and implementing an effective rollout plan in phases. It also provides a case study of how The Nature Conservancy improved information sharing and collaboration across its global organization using SharePoint social features. Sample metrics for measuring the success of a SharePoint social implementation are presented.
This document discusses how Telenor improved their website by simplifying and streamlining content and processes. They reduced the website by 80% from over 1000 pages to around 500 pages. This resulted in conversion rates increasing 100% on key pages and emails to customer service decreasing 35%. The approach taken was to have a cross-functional team work in an iterative process driven by user needs and business goals rather than individual department needs. Content was prioritized and the site was launched in gradual, step-by-step phases rather than a big bang launch. This process change led to success for Telenor.

Mobile first, Responsive Design and The Core ModelIda Aalen
This document discusses designing websites with a mobile-first and responsive approach. It recommends (1) focusing on "core" pages that users rely on the most to accomplish tasks, rather than the front page, (2) designing first for mobile to prioritize important content, and (3) using responsive design with a grid system to display content adaptively across different screen sizes.
Basic points about web usability, and will be content too a small comparative study in two web sites to explain in a practical way who to measure the usability of a site.
Fred Lebolt, Senior Vice President of Sun-Times Media, gave a presentation about how the company transitioned to a cloud-based content management system. The summary is:
1) Sun-Times Media consolidated its content, advertising, and publishing systems onto a single cloud-based platform to improve collaboration across its 40 newspapers.
2) This allowed the newspapers to share content more easily across multiple platforms and locations, including editing pages remotely.
3) The transition enabled Sun-Times Media to launch new digital products like mobile apps and e-readers.
In recent months, information providers have released a range of modifications to many abstracting and full text journal platforms. Whether an update to its look and feel or a radical restructuring of its search, browse, and full text features, any successful change to a familiar interface requires communication, tolerance, and understanding among the affected information provider, publisher(s), and library customers. Join NISO for a webinar in which a publisher and a librarian share their own experiences with determining priorities, learning lessons, and improving practices related to changed and changing information platforms.
