‘I’m sick of this’, announced Mip
grumpily. ‘Let’s just A HREF ourselves
into the Land of Beulah.’ They wrote the
requisite text on the stone, and were
presently flung through the air, but this
time they received a nasty shock - they
hit a firewall, and fell peremptorily to the
rocky ground. The sky was flashing and
beeping an alert:
PASSWORD INCORRECT
How embarrassing.
One of the shepherds could be heard guffawing in the background. Soon enough the goats
started laughing too. There are no shortcuts, he sputtered. Oh, there might be a few that look
good on the surface, but you’ll soon find that the superficial stuff you can do for free and quick
don’t get you anywhere. You’ve got to put the hours in. Look at me, for example.
They did, and he was not a strong role-model with his goats and his boots.
Rely on the shortcuts, your understanding stays limited, and when you run into the wall you
won’t know how to get around it. Not that you have to memorise everything. But you need to
know what to do, or where to go, to find out.
But I don’t want to learn it, Mip complained. All this language stuff, it’s not
me. It doesn’t use my talents, it’s not what I’m here for.
Sure, but you’re going to at least need to be able to talk to people who are
good at it. Look at this guy over here - and the shepherd waived his hand
to his left. There, on a rock, in the same dun-coloured clothing as the rock
itself, a homunculous was busily scribbling away.
I didn’t even notice him, Mip whispered.
They’re everywhere, and they’re happy to help you, but you’ve got to
meet them half way. You’ve got learn a bit of their language.
OK, Mip sighed. Where do we start?
So the shepherd led them over to their own bit of rock. ‘Here’, he offered.
I’ll give you a start. And he scratched <head> on the rock.
They heard a scraping sound behind them. When they turned around,
they saw a fresh crack in the rock. The ground was moving under their
feet. Golly, the landscape had gone all Signs and Omens.
