UX principles

Understand thy user
Defining the UX research study
1. Identify a problem area

What problem area are you passionate about ?
What problem area is the client interested in?
What problem area do you have resources for?
What problem area is really a problem?

Exercise: List problem areas then select one
Example:
University Cafeteria
2. Explore questions about the problem area

                         Exercise: affinity diagramming
Examples

How do I know which meal is served today?
How long do I queue for?
Can I have my lunch delivered to my office?
How much is lunch of the day today?
How many people are on the queue now?
Where is the nearest school cafeteria?
         Do they accept Mpesa?
3. Choose which questions to
solve

 Exercise:
 Categorisation and decision making
Examples
Payment processes Waiting
Do they accept Mpesa? How long do I queue for?
How many people are on the
                                   queue now?
Menu Options
How do I know which meal is
served today? Pricing
How much is lunch of the day
                                   today?
Delivery
Can I have my lunch delivered to
my office? Availability/Location
                                   Where is the nearest school
                                   cafeteria?
4. Broadly speaking, who is the
user?

 Exercise:
List all possible users and then select the ones you
 will focus on
Examples
            User Types:
          University students
              Lecturers
           Cafeteria Owner
        New university students

      Selection Questions:
What user do you have easy access to?
What user is the client interested in?
Who is the user with the highest benefit?
Who is the most neglected user?
5. Create a Hunt statement

“ To investigate how new Nairobi
   University students at Chiromo
campus search, decide on and pay for
             food items”
6. Conduct user research

• Field research
• Desk research
• Industry competitors

We will cover this in the next UX session.
