This document discusses several unconscious defense mechanisms that protect the conscious mind from anxiety, including projection, repression, regression, rationalization, sublimation, and displacement. Projection involves attributing one's own unacceptable motives to others. Repression pushes anxiety-provoking thoughts into the unconscious mind. Regression is an unconscious attempt to return to an earlier age when one felt more secure. Rationalization creates explanations to conceal unworthy motives. Sublimation channels frustrated energy into alternative activities. Displacement discharges painful feelings onto less threatening people or objects instead of the original source.
