Decanter centrifuge operation notes
Operate decanter centrifuge is always an important thing during whole drilling fluid process or solids
removal. Including oil and gas drilling, HDD, or waste management, etc.
XI'AN, China - July 6, 2016 - PRLog -- Decanter centrifuge operation is rather critical for whole solids
removal or solids control of oilfield drilling fluid process. As it is the most important equipment used in
oilfields, food industry, waste-water treatment, good understanding its operation and maintenance means
much more important for every engineer. Lets take following Aipu decanter centrifuge operation as
example
4 Main Steps of decanter centrifuge operation
Centrifuge operator shall carefully read handbook and relevant technical data, know working performance
and operational essentials of centrifuge and operate strictly according to operating instruction.
Step 1: Preparation before start-up centrifuge
1. Check electric and control system (such as control cabinet for VFD decanter centrifuge);
2. Check process system related to the equipment;
3. Check the main motor components if any abnormality exists; check all fasteners if they are reliable and
screw up fasteners if any looseness appears;
4. Manually rotate belt pulley for 2-3 circles to check if any abnormality exists;
5. Check the tightness of triangle adhesive tape
6. Pay attention to the lubrication system of centrifuge
Step 2: Start-up decanter centrifuge
1. Confirm operating buttons; The buttons including Voltmeter, Ammeter, Frequency converter operation
panel, power indicator, lubrication pump indicator, frequency conversion indicator,fault
indicator,Start,Stop,Start lubrication pump, Stop lubrication pump,connect frequency converter, Disconnect

2. Press "Start lubrication pump" button; (When temperature is low in winter, the oil pressure is too high
after lubrication pump is started, thus the centrifuge cannot be started up; at this time, lubrication pump
shall be kept working for a moment and then start up the main motor after the reduction of pressure; the
minimum and maximum pressure of electric connecting pressure gauge can be adjusted manually.)
3. After the oil pressure is stable (the feeding and oil return of the main bearing is normal), press the
"Connect frequency converter" button to start up frequency converter and then press the "Start" button on
operation panel to start up the main motor and auxiliary motor; the main motor and auxiliary motor shall
run steadily after reaching the set target frequency value (General, the main motors are imported from Italy,
for other solid control equipment, such as mud cleaner, shear pump and sand pump, they have the same
Italy imported motors, which could ensure an high quality and high working efficiency in drilling working);
see Instruction Manual of frequency converter for the setting of values of frequency converter; pay
attention to observe the running condition of centrifuge and stability and no abnormal noise are required;

4. Adjustment of different revolving speed: when adjusting, firstly setup the revolving speed of the main
motor and then adjust the revolving speed of the auxiliary motor based on the actual separation conditions.
In Aipu solids control we pay more attention on such detail, especially when we test our shale shaker; we
always spend more times to adjust the shaker speed to make it could be in a good working condition.
5. Keep adding fresh water for 5-10 minutes until confirming the centrifuge is clean, open the feed valve
and gradually increase feed quantity to the normal production feed quantity;
6. Observe main motor status and material processing effect;
7. Do not conduct any maintenance or overhauling on the centrifuge during running of the main motor.
Step 3: Decanter centrifuge operation procedure and notices
1. Operational procedure: start up - feed washing liquid to clean for 5 minutes - feed material and produce -
feed washing liquid to clean for 10 minutes - shut down.

2. If the centrifuge will be shut down for a long term or the accumulated material in centrifuge will be
cleaned away, the centrifuge shall be washed times (reset the target frequency as 5Hz): wash - shut down -
restart to 4-5Hz (the revolving speed is about 240-300r/min) - feed washing liquid to clean for 5 minutes -
shut down - restart to 4-5Hz (the revolving speed is about 240-300r/min) - feed washing liquid to clean for
5 minutes - shut down (or repeat the above procedures again).
3. Timely handle abnormal conditions and complete operation record as followings.
(a). Record the working condition every hour with detail information; (such as: time, running frequency of
the main motor, feed quantity, cleaning)
(b). Complete the lubrication grease adding record of centrifuge (strictly conducting the regulated
lubrication requirements).
Notes:
1. Do not feed materials at "down" status.
2. To prevent materials blockage in rotor after the equipment has overload and stops operating
automatically (alarm bell signal) when the feed valve or feed pump is not closed, we require users to
conduct interlock control of the feed pump and the main motor (the feed pump stops when the main motor
stops; the feed pump can be started only after the main motor is started.);
3. Do not wash the equipment shell with water to prevent water from getting into the motor. Usually, the
water should be stored in mud tank.
Step 4: Shut down decanter centrifuge notices
1. Gradually reduce the feed quantity until stopping feeding and close feed pump and feed valve;
2. Conduct washing as required in the above operational procedure B;
3. Press the "Stop" button on the operation panel to stop the main motor and auxiliary motor;

4. Press "Stop lubrication pump" button to stop lubrication pump and other auxiliary system equipment;
5. Conduct freeze-proofing measures when shutting down at the environmental temperature under 0°C.
