This course introduces students to the globalization of the Portuguese language across five continents. It will provide a socio-political, economic, and cultural overview of Portuguese-speaking countries and territories through lectures, discussions, and guest speakers. Students will enhance their Portuguese vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural knowledge through assignments and in-class activities. The course aims to educate students about the history and spread of Portuguese, cultural similarities and differences between places, and challenging stereotypes about Portuguese-speaking communities worldwide. Assessment will include participation, presentations, papers and a final exam. The tentative schedule outlines discussions of Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
