a synopsis of the matter of âpredestinationâ.
The Latin text of the Catholic Vulgate version has in Romans 8:29â30 and in
Ephesians 1:5 and 11 the wordspraedestinavit and praedestinati.
Many bible-translators have copied and used those Latin words, in anglicised
forms, instead of properly translating the Greek text of the New Testament. This
has led to misunderstandings.
In the Greek text of those verses, the relevant word is the combination pro-
orizĂ´. The part orizĂ´ (horizĂ´) referred to such things as âbindingâ,
âappointingâ, âseparatingâ, âmarking out by boundariesâ, âmarking out for
oneselfâ, and so on.
In short, the meaning of the four above-mentioned verses is that in the first
century, God marked out and separated (chose) for himself a group of people for a
special purpose. He set them apart and gave them his Holy Spirit, and betrothed
7. them to his son Jesus. That is what the verb proorizĂ´ refers to, in the Greek text
of Romans 8:29â30 and Ephesians 1:5 and 11.
Here, it is good to keep in mind that those verses do not talk about people of our
day. One must not make the mistake that when one reads the Bible, one thinks that
all the âniceâ things in that book somehow apply to the reader. For, that simply is
not so. One does not become marked out by God and separated for a special
destiny, by reading about people who were that. One does not become a saint, by
reading about the saints.
The saints were a âfirst-fruits harvestâ for God, here on Earth. In what we today
view as âend timeâ, there will be another âharvestâ, the great, innumerable
multitude.
A number of religious writers have talked about âpredestinationâ. That word is
found even in many bible-versions. Those things have caused some people to
think that nothing can change their fate or destiny.
But, what do the words âpredestinationâ and âpredestineâ or âpredestinateâ mean?
And, more importantly, what does the Greek text of the relevant New Testament
passages actually say and mean and refer to? This article takes a closer look at that
matter.
The origin of the word âpredestinateâ.
The passages in question are Romans 8:29 and 30 and Ephesians 1:5 and 11. The
reason why many bible-translators have put into those four verses the word
âpredestinateâ, is simply that they have copied that from the Latin text of the
Catholic Vulgate version which
has praedestinavit and praedestinati in those passages.
It appears that the word combination prae-destino was rare in old Latin, but
its verb part destino was used in such meanings as âto bindâ, âto intend to
buyâ, âto appointâ, âto chooseâ, and so on.
The relevant word in the Greek text of the New Testament.
In the four above-mentioned verses, the Greek NT text has proorizĂ´. That word
consists of the preposition pro and the verbhorizĂ´ which in old Greek referred
to such things as âbindingâ, âappointingâ, âdividingâ, âseparatingâ, âmarking out
by boundariesâ, âmarking out for oneselfâ, and so on.
8. (A note: In old Greek, the meaning of the related noun horizĂ´n was originally
âlimitsâ, âa separating circleâ.)
Those four verses refer to the fact that in the first century, God marked out and
separated for himself a group of people, for a special purpose.
In short: Romans 8:29â30 and Ephesians 1:5 and 11 refer to people whom God in
those days gave his Holy Spirit. They were chosen for something special. They
were a spiritual âfirst-fruits harvestâ for God, here on Earth.
The passages in question.
Here are the four relevant verses. In the parts which are highlighted, the Greek text
has the verb proorizĂ´ whose meaning was explained above.
Ephesians 1:5 having marked us [a] out beforehand for adoption through Jesus
Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will (DBY, highlighting
and note sign added)
Ephesians 1:11 in whom we [a] have also obtained an inheritance, being marked
out beforehand according to the purpose of him who works all things
according to the counsel of his own will (DBY, note sign and highlighting
added)
Romans 8:29 Because whom he has foreknown, he has also predestinated to be
conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among
many brethren. 30 But whom he has predestinated, these also he has called;
and whom he has called, these also he has justified; but whom he has justified,
these also he has glorified. (DBY, highlighting added)
a Please note that the words âusâ and âweâ in Ephesians 1:5 and 11 refer to Paul
and the saints whom he was writing to. We who today read a copy of that letter,
are not mentioned in it. (Even we are mentioned in some places in the Scriptures,
but only indirectly, in regard to still future things. The
articles nga020.htm and nga030.htm have some notes on this.)
Again: The old Greek verb proorizĂ´ did not really refer to âpredestinationâ but
rather to âmarking outâ and âseparatingâ. The four above-quoted verses refer to
the fact that in the first century, God chose and set apart a group of people, for
something special.
9. Warnings given to the saints.
In New Testament times, and to a degree even before that, God called a number of
people to become a part of a very special group, but the called ones were not
forced to heed that calling.
If they wanted to make it to the Kingdom, they had to hold on to their high calling.
See for instance this passage:
2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and
electionsure, for if you do these things you will never stumble (NKJV)
âIf you do these thingsâ â the context shows what those things were:
2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and
of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to
life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and
virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious
promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having
escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 But also for this very
reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to
knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,
7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these
things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is
shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his
old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and
election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an
entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (NKJV)
âGodlinessâ, âdiligenceâ, âself-controlâ, âvirtueâ, âperseveranceâ, and more â this
shows that the saints could not just sit down and lean back and say, âI am savedâ
or âI am predestinedâ â there was also âdoingâ, for them. Of course, this did not
mean that they could âearnâ salvation through âworksâ. God offered them
salvation as a free gift, by grace. But, they faced a risk of missing out on that
freely offered salvation, if they did not show interest in it or in Jesus who had paid
for it. When they were offered that free gift, they had to grab hold of it, and then
they had to act and live according to their high calling. If they did that, they would
make it to the Kingdom.
The apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the saints in Corinth that they had been
âbought with a priceâ (1 Corinthians 6:20 and 7:23). Consequently, he wrote to
10. them, âglorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Godâsâ. In
connection with this, Paul gave a long list of moral guidelines. (See those passages
in your bible, along with their wider context.)
Also: The saints were to be doing good works. That is a central part of
righteousness. The article nga080.htm has some notes on this.
The apostle Paul told the disciples in Philippi to keep working
toward their salvation.
The apostle Paul had been in Philippi and helped and guided the disciples there.
When he had left that town and area, he wrote to them that when he was absent,
they were to keep working toward their salvation.
Philippians 2:12 So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not
only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, work out your own
salvation [b] with fear and trembling. [c] 13 For it is God who is working in you,
enabling you both to will and to act for His good purpose. 14 Do everything
without grumbling and arguing, 15 so that you may be blameless and pure,
children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among
whom you shine like stars in the world. 16 Hold firmly the message of life.
Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didnât run in vain or labor for
nothing. (HCSB, note signs added)
b âWork out your own salvationâ â some translations have âwork toward your
salvationâ, or similar. Point: There was effort to be made. They could not just lean
back and say, âwe are predestinedâ, âwe are savedâ.
c The Greek text has the rhyming phrase meta phobou kai tromou whose
literal meaning is âwith fear and tremblingâ. It appears that Paul was simply
telling those people to âmake their calling and election sureâ, just as Simon Peter
did, see the earlier quoted 2 Peter 1:10.
It was God who gave them salvation (lasting life), but they had to hold on to that
salvation, and they had to live according to the high calling which God had given
them.
More, regarding ârunning the raceâ towards salvation:
Philippians 3:10 My goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrection and
the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 assuming
that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead. 12 Not that I
have already reached the goal or am already fully mature, but I make every
11. effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
13 Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I
do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, 14 I pursue
as my goal the prize promised by Godâs heavenly call in Christ Jesus. 15
Therefore, all who are mature should think this way. And if you think
differently about anything, God will reveal this to you also. (HCSB)
Notice Paulâs words, ânot that I have already reached the goalâ, verse 12. In other
words: There was a need for Paul and the saints in general, to keep pressing on, so
that they would make it.
Things that people might connect to the concept
âpredestinationâ.
There are many things that people might connect to the concept âpredestinationâ.
Often, that includes a concept of belonging to an exclusive group, âthe electâ, âthe
chosen onesâ, âthe first-fruitsâ, and so on.
Some preachers have tickled their followersâ egos, by causing them to think that
by following the preacher and joining his church, they became a part of âGodâs
first-fruitsâ â a part of âthe 144000â, or something similar. But the facts are, of
course, that it was the saints [d] who were the âfirst-fruitsâ, the 144000 of
Revelation 14. It was they who were specially marked out and separated, for a
special purpose. (The article nta030.htm has some notes on the 144000 and the
great multitude, and the difference between those two groups.)
Likewise, some preachers have copied the old Catholic âtrue churchâ dogma and
modified it and used it for causing people to believe that their church (the
preacherâs) is âtrueâ, âoriginalâ and âuncorruptedâ, âthe true church of Godâ, and
that those who follow the preacher and join his church are âthe chosen onesâ, âthe
electâ, âpredestinedâ, and so on. But, those things are mind-manipulation through
ego-tickling. Again, the facts are that the group whom the New Testament talks
about as separated or âmarked outâ ones, consists of the saints. [d] The
article naa010.htm has some notes on the âtrue churchâ dogma. The
articlenba020.htm takes a closer look at such things as âcallingâ, âelectionâ and
âsanctificationâ.
Then, some preachers have combined the Catholic âtrue churchâ dogma with the
Baptist, Millerist âchurch erasâ dogma, and applied both things (in modified
forms) to their own churches. The article naa030.htm sorts out that matter.
d In this article, the word âsaintsâ refers to those who received the Holy Spirit in
biblical times, first century CE or earlier. See also the article nga030.htm.
12. Soul, souls
ďˇ The Bible does not mention such a concept as âimmortal soulâ. The talk
about âimmortal soulsâ appears to be of Catholic origin. Humans are mortal
and do not have everlasting life in themselves; that is something they must
be given by God.
ďˇ In numerous bible-passages where English bible-translators have put in the
word âsoulâ, the meaning is âa personâ, âan individualâ; in some other
passages, the meaning is more like âlifeâ, âmindâ, or similar. More:
ďˇ What bible-translators have rendered as âsoulâ, is often the
Hebrew nephesh or the Greek psuchĂŞ. Those words had a wide usage
with many different meanings.
o The Hebrew word nephesh meant such things as âbreathâ, âlifeâ,
âmindâ, âpersonâ, âbeingâ, et cetera. The 1769KJ version
translates nephesh in many different ways, such as âsoulâ, âlifeâ,
âpersonâ, âmindâ, âheartâ, âcreatureâ, âbodyâ, âhimselfâ,
âyourselvesâ, âdeadâ, âwillâ, âdesireâ, âmanâ, âthemselvesâ, âanyâ
and âappetiteâ.
ď§ A note: The KJV1769 never translates the noun nephesh as
âspiritâ or âghostâ, except in Job 11:20 and Jeremiah 15:9
where it talks about âgiving up the ghostâ. (Some versions
note in the margin of Job 11:20, âor, a puff of breathâ; some
others make it to a âsighâ, and so on. In the case of Jeremiah
15:9, there are numerous different interpretations â guesses â
as to what the Hebrew wording might have meant, such as
âbreathe her lastâ, âgasps for breathâ, âher breathing is
labouredâ, and so on.)
o The Greek word psuchĂŞ meant such things as âlifeâ, âbreathâ,
âselfâ (mind, consciousness), âspiritâ. The 1769 KJversion translates
it in various ways, such as âlifeâ, âmindâ, âheartâ, âsoulâ.
ďˇ Regarding the root and origin (etymology) of the English word âsoulâ â
etymological lexicons give only dubious explanations, if any. Some note
that the word âsoulâ (Middle English soule, Old English sawol) is
related to similar words in other Germanic languages, but that does not lead
to the actual root or original meaning of that word.

Ten Horns:BlueLetter Bible
The belief of life after death IS unbiblical and false. No one is alive right now.
Every person is in a unconscious sleep until the resurrection. The problem is you
folks carry the pagan idea of necromancy. The dead does not live and they are
not communicating with us. Why would Jesus come again and raise the dead
from their graves if the dead is already in heaven? Or punish sinners who were
already in hell? Why did Jesus call death a sleep? Lazarus was clearly dead but
He said that he was asleep. Did Jesus snatch Lazarus from heaven or did He
raise him from a dreamless sleep? I propose the latter. Psalm 115:17 The dead
do not praise the LORD, Nor do any who go down into silence; Ecclesiastes 9:5-
6 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have
no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate
and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all
that is done under the sun. John 11:10-14 After saying these things, he said to
them, âOur friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.â The
disciples said to him, âLord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.â Now Jesus
had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
Then Jesus told them plainly, âLazarus has died, Even Martha believed that
Lazarus would rise at the second coming and that he was not alive or a spirit.
"Martha said to him, âI know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last
day.â She didn't know that Christ was going to raise him from the dead at that
moment but we see where her mind was. Jesus did not deny the resurrection at
the Second Coming, nor did he tell her that Lazarus was in a better place.
Instead he basically said, "Don't be sad for long, I will raise him up now, as a
example of what will happen to those who are redeemed." (I'm obviously
paraphrasing lol) The problem is that you all accept the doctrines passed down
from Rome. You accept Catholic doctrines even if you aren't Catholic. The
Catholic Church is nothing but Roman Paganism hidden under a Christian Garb
and Necromancy was a huge pagan ideology. The ONLY time we will ascend
into a higher state of being is when Christ returns. But when you die, you die.
Period. You are unconscious until the Lord returns. But since the brain is
destroyed in death, you will not even know how long you slept when the Lord
wakes you. The Lord can come in the year 3030 but to your perception it would
seem like a quick minute. Stop believing that when people die they go to heaven
or hell. None of that is happening until the Second Coming and the more you
embrace these ideas of the dead being alive, the easier the devil can get you into
14. Spiritualistic and demonic doctrines. Spiritualism is nothing but Witchcraft under
a Christian garb, and it's only possible because Christians aren't reading the
Bible. They believe in the afterlife and that's not good.
he trinity doctrine is not biblical. There is one God, The Father. Christ is His only
begotten son and therefore divine (God by nature). The spirit belongs to God and
not a different person to him. The Holy Spirit = The Spirit of God and Christ John
17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and
Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. The Holy Spirit is not a 3rd God ! called God
The Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they
are the sons of God. 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where
the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons,
God hath sent forth ''THE SPIRIT OF HIS SON'' into your hearts, crying, Abba,
Father. The Holy Spirit = The Spirit of God and Christ God is God the Father !
Jesus is the only begotten SON OF God (Divine) ! and the Holy Spirit is the spirit
of God that reveals all truth. John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go
away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said,
I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. Jesus Christ himself said
that His Father is greater than Him. Jesus Christ the Son of God died for our sins
! not God The Father. God The Father cannot die. Deuteronomy 32:39-40 See
now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I
wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift
up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains
were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from
everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Psalm 102:27 But thou art the same, and
thy years shall have no end. Zechariah 6:13 âEven he shall build the temple of
the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and
he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between
them both.â In this verse it's very clear, the plan of salvation shall be between
them both ! 1) God The Father ! 2) Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son ! Two
persons ! not 3. John 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour
cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the
Father. John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for
salvation is of the Jews. John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the
true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father
seeketh such to worship him. John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship
him must worship him in spirit and in truth. These verses talk about our Father
who is spirit, and we are to worship him in spirit and in truth. Many think that our
God is a "mystery" which they call a Trinity. The words of Jesus "Ye know not
what ye worship" would apply if our God is a mystery. When we get to heaven,
God will not then say "Meet my spirit". We will see God face to face, and we will
know him. The Father of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord

Catholic Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now pope Benedict XVI) makes this
confession as to the origin of the chief Trinity text of Matthew 28:19 saying: "The
basic form of our (Matthew 28:19 Trinitarian) profession of faith took shape
during the course of the second and third centuries in connection with the
ceremony of baptism. So far as its place of origin is concerned, the text (Matthew
28:19) came from the city of Rome. The Trinity baptism and text of Matthew
28:19 therefore did not originate from the original Church that started in
Jerusalem around 33 A.D. It was rather, as the evidence proves, a later invention
of Roman Catholicism completely fabricated. Very few know about these
historical facts.â
