2. CAUSES FOR HEARING IMPAIRMENT

5. CLASSIFICATION OF HEARING IMPAIRED
1. According to the age at onset of deafness
- congenitally deaf- born deaf
- Adventitiously deaf- Born with normal hearing
and became deaf later
2. According to language development
- prelingually deaf- born deaf or lost speech before
speech develops
- Post lingually deaf- Lst speech after deve;p[ment
of speech and language
3 According to the place of impairment
- Conductive hearing loss-It is due to the interference in the
transmission of sound to and through the sense organ(outer or middle
ear)
-Sensironeural hearing loss- Due to the abnormality of the inner year
Mixed hearing loss- Combination of both

14. Conductive hearing loss- causes
ACOUSTIC NEUROMA- a non cancerous tumour in the
outer ear
causes vertigo, tinnitus etc
OTOSCLEROSIS- Building up of a spongy bone like tissue in
the middle ear
OTITIS MEDIA- Inflammation of the middle ear
it is due to bacterial or viral infections
primarily occurs in the child hood
CERUMEN- It is block in the ear canal and adhers to the
eardrum(ear wax)

• MENIERE’s disease
A part of cochlea swells, results in lack of balance
• MENINGITIS- inflammation of the layers of the
brain
• HEREDITY
• PRE-NATAL INFECTIONS OF MOTHER
• VIRAL AND BACTERIAL INFECITONS
• DRUGS
• UNWANTED NOISES
