This document summarizes a presentation given by four researchers - Dr. Domenico Dentoni, Dr. Verena Bitzer, Dr. Jessica Duncan, and Mr. Dimitris Mitsopoulos - at the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association Symposium in Capetown, South Africa in June 2014. The presentation examined the different strategies used by agribusiness companies in Africa to build and maintain legitimacy. Through case studies and grounded theory, the researchers developed typologies of companies and identified their core strategies, regions of origin, approaches to legitimacy, and use of institutional forms. The researchers concluded that companies adopt contingency strategies rather than paradox strategies to balance pragmatic, cognitive, and moral legitimacy concerns. Further
