Cultural entropy

Cultural entropy refers to the amount of energy wasted in an organization due to unproductive conflict, friction, and frustration. It is caused by the personal entropy of current and past leaders, which can become institutionalized through bureaucratic systems and rigid structures. Cultural entropy manifests at different levels of an organization and shows up as excessive control, blame, competition and confusion. An organization can measure its cultural entropy through a cultural values assessment to identify the most limiting values present. Depending on the level of cultural entropy, an organization may need minor adjustments, transformation of culture and structure, or changes in leadership to improve performance.

Cultural entropy manifests at different levels of an organization and shows up as excessive control, blame, competition and confusion. An organization can measure its cultural entropy through a cultural values assessment. Higher cultural entropy is associated with more serious issues requiring leadership development, cultural and structural transformation to improve performance. Reducing cultural entropy to below 20% is important for healthy organizational functioning.
