Research question
• In Natikiri District, Nampula Province, Mozambique: Can a
local community and health system strategy that has
determined and prioritized appropriate, acceptable and
cost-effective maternal child health interventions, in
partnership with government, health professionals and
other stakeholders (an Alert Community Prepared Hospital
Care Continuum), lead to decreases in maternal and
neonatal mortality when implemented in a sustainable
manner?
3. IMCHA Project Overview
Project General Objectives:
•Contribute to decreasing maternal and neonatal
mortality rates in Natikiri District as measured
over the 3.5 years of project implementation.

• STRATEGY #1: Support knowledge and practice of sexual and reproductive health
(SRH), with a focus on rights, family planning (FP), and contraception, education
and adolescent sexual health.
• STRATEGY #2: Teach emergency obstetrical care guidelines and “Helping Babies
Breathe” and “Helping Babies Survive” to maternity staff.
• STRATEGY #3: Develop a community based transport system for pregnant women
and newborns to attend prenatal visits and receive timely urgent care.
• STRATEGY #4: Develop prenatal care that women, men and their families in the
community see as important, acceptable and useful and allows the birth care
team to make recommendations for a safe delivery.

• STRATEGY #5: Fully Integrate of Marrere General Hospital into Nampula City
Maternal Health Services.
• STRATEGY #6: Support and enable the Mozambican government’s anti-bribery
campaign in hospitals.

respond to increases in service demand.
