2. Introduction
• Comprehensive Public Health Practicum is the part of final year BPH
curriculum that involves 4 months exposure to the working environment
of public health organization (NGOs/INGOs or government
organizations) to engage students as a public health professional in real
life professional public health setting.
• It is designed to build confidence of students to make rational and
evidence based decisions and improve their management capabilities.

4. Host Organization
Mission
FAIRMED's mission is to improve the accessibility of basic health care
services to the people in remote or neglected areas. The quality of basic
health care promotes and improves the well-being of persons who are
disadvantaged, thereby contributing to break the vicious cycle of poverty
and disease.

5. • As maternal and neonatal health would represent health of a
marginalized community in the country, FAIRMED in Nepal started its
community health work from Kapilvastu district in 2011 with focus on
maternal and newborn health.
• The project then gradually expanded its program interventions into
applying comprehensive approach in tackling NTDs.

3. Water and Sanitation Hygiene
FAIRMED is now moving towards a thematic focus on Neglected Tropical
Diseases while continuing with MNH related health care to the poor and
marginalized communities.

7. Ongoing Projects
Rural Health Improvement Project(RHIP):
Three rural municipalities of Baglung district( Nishikhola, Tamankhola and
Dhorpatan Municipality)
Duration: 2018- 2019(pilot), still ongoing
Goal: “Improved health status of targeted communities of rural Baglung”
Major areas:
Maternal and Newborn Health
Neglected Tropical Disease and Disability
Water Sanitation and Hygiene
Beneficiaries: Pregnant women, Lactating mothers, newborns, people vulnerable
to and suffering from NTDs and person with disabilities

8. Essential Health Project:
7 Municipalities and 11 Rural Municipalities of Kapilvastu, Rupandehi and
Nawalparasi West (Province 5)
Duration: 2018- 2019(pilot), still ongoing
Objectives: Strengthen health system management of local health
facilities, capacity of health human resource, access of community health
services to marginalized communities and increase KAP on WASH,
MNH, NTDs and disabilities
Beneficiaries: 24000 households through mass sensitization on NTDs
and MNH, 1700 people with disabilities and pregnant mothers and
newborn

9. UPAKAR project follow up
FAIRMED implemented UPAKAR project for three years(2015-2018) in
Sindhupalchowk district with objective of resumption of health services in
selected earthquake affected areas by strengthening health service delivery,
improving health seeking behavior among children and women, and person
with disabilities.
Inadequate planning and management capacity of local authorities and health
workers in new federal structure was observed.
The follow up has been going on since 2019 for the same project.

● To acquire skills to assess and describe the situation of public health, its
strengths and concerns, problems and challenges
● To acquire skills to manage and administer public health services
● To gain experience by participating in the activities (planning,
organizing, implementing and evaluating) of the organizations.

13. Methods and approaches
Organizational learning:
● Placement in the organization for the period of four months.
● Observation, participation along with the assistance in regular
organizational activities and programs.
● Field work participation in public health projects of the organization
● Discussion along with guidance from respective mentors, supervisors and
staffs in the organization.

14. Public health project learning:
● Consultation and discussion with mentors, contact person and staffs of
the organization for the management and conduction of learning project.
● Review of project plans and budget allocations.
● Support in project implementations.
● Monitoring and evaluation

15. Learning Project
● Doable project planned, implemented and evaluated by students
themselves during practicum
● Our most probable learning project will be on Maternal and Newborn
Health which we will decide after we get to work on the organization
● The project will be selected on the basis of feasibility, availability of
resources, our interest area and aligning with the needs of the community
as well as organization

Organizational learning:
Organizational characteristics, policies, management functions and networking
through various public health programs, projects and day-to-day activities.
Public health project learning:
Planning, implementation and evaluation of a doable ‘mini project’ as per our
learning interest and thematic area of the organization
