Back to Nature
In this project natural drainage patterns were restored and
their capacities increased. In a particular area a 12 inch
drainage pipe beneath the old driveway was expected to
accommodate a 16 acre water shed, which resulted in
regular flooding of the driveway. This was replaced with
a bridge and a rock lined creek bed. Vegetative buffers
surround the creek bed to provide filtration of surface
water. Stormwater calculations were provided by Arcadia
Engineers.
Native stone and vegetation line all of the stormwater
swales to prevent erosion of the stream banks. These
channels eventually intersect a blue line stream, which
is highly protected. All water on this particular site is
responsibly managed and filtered prior to entering the
active streams downhill.

PLUNGE POOL (bottom image)
This waterfall feature releases surface water into
a plunge pool at the intersection of two major
swales. The pool dissipates the momentum of the
water and allows sediment to filter to the bottom
before continuing downstream.
Drainage Plan
2015 drainage plan
showing the new path of
the stream coming from
the bridge. An island
is formed between the
two major tributaries to
preserve notable trees
in the area. The path of
the stream is designed to
avoid the root zone of all
nearby mature trees.

LOW IMPACT LANDSCAPE
The landscape was designed to be low impact with regards to water usage,
maintenance, and aesthetics. The house, by Alphin Design Build, was designed
around two mature trees along the side property lines. The landscape highlights these
trees and the house itself.
The primary groundcover is Carex pennsylvanica (pennsylvania sedge), which was
planted as a “no-mow” lawn. When compared to traditional lawn turf species this
selection uses a fraction of the water, requires no fertilizer, and only needs to be
mowed once per year.
IRRIGATION: The roof of the house is pitched to a single collection channel so that all rain water may
be harvested and stored in two large cisterns, which were designed by Rain Water Solutions. The irrigation
system is designed with low flow heads and is supplied primarily with the harvested rain water.

AGRICULTURAL DESIGN
BURKETT FARM, 2014 - PRESENT
Burkett Farm is a philanthropic organic vegetable farm and teaching facility. It is privately
funded and all of its food production is donated to local organizations such as Interfaith Food
Shuttle and Urban Ministries. This farm was designed to pay homage to the land, which
used to be farmland and is now a private estate. This space will soon have a barn, teaching
kitchen, and raised wheel chair accessible planters. The farm is managed by a full-time
farmer who utilizes volunteer labor for all of the production on site.
[Above] This solar powered well provides all of the water
for irrigation to the farm, it is 100% off the grid.
LIGHTING
ACCENT
Illuminating trees, walls, and other
architectural features in the landscape
helps to show the depth of the space
at night, which would otherwise look
flat in the darkness
FUNCTION
Path Lights and ‘Moon’ Lights
are essential for safety when
illuminating dark paths and steps.

This driveway design
is intended to provide
comfortable circulation of
vehicles through the site.
Short-term guest parking is
provided in the front circular
auto court. The owners host
meetings and events at
their home, which required
this additional parking. The
design allows guest to enter
and leave without needing to
drive in reverse.
DRIVEWAY RENOVATION PROJECT, 2014
TURFPAVE
This turfpave parking lot was created
to provide parking for up to 200 guests
during special events on site.
1. The grid is installed on a pervious
aggregate and sand base.
2. Top soil and sod are installed over
the grid.
3. The end product is a permeable
grass shoulder that can support
the weight of a fire truck without
creating ruts.
WHEEL TRACKS
The brick auto court on the side of the home is designed for the private use
of the owners. The wheel tracks help to communicate this hierarchy when
contrasted with the main asphalt driveway.

This brick wall serves as an extension of the home’s architecture into
the landscape. It provides a sense of enclosure when standing in the
front yard and. The brick columns in this design needed to be robust in
order to be in proportion to the house in the background.

BRIDGE PROJECT,
SUMMER 2013
STONEWORK: The vision for the bridge was that it look very old, as if it were constructed by the farmers of the land
from previous centuries. The land is abundant with light colored fieldstone, which the farmers could have accumulated over
time and re-purposed for the bridge. To achieve this look five skilled masons worked for half a year on the stone facade.
HORTICULTURAL DESIGN
PASTURE RESTORATION,
SUMMER 2013
Swaths of native Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem) were
installed to serve as riparian buffers surrounding the creeks throughout
the site. This species was also mixed into the large pasture spaces as
part of a restoration project.
Pollinators
Seasonal color was mixed into the native grass
matrix to attract pollinator species and other
beneficial organisms.
Restoration Plan
2013 planting plan
showing overview of
the pasture restoration
project. The process
began with removal
of invasive broadleaf
species. Followed by the
incorporation of native
grass species.
	 Little Bluestem /
	 Tall Fescue
	 Muhlenbergia /
	Nassella
WOODLAND RESTORATION
Natural areas surrounding this home were
barren and provided little erosion control
or filtration of run-off. Furthermore, many
of the species that were growing in these
areas were invasives such as Microstegium
vimineum (japanese stiltgrass) and
Ligustrum sinense (chinese privet).
The natural areas were all inventoried and
invasives were removed using mechanical
and organic methods. A dense groundcover
of mixed ferns was designed to compete
with the invasive species and to serve as
a riparian buffer around the creeks in the
heavily shaded areas.

Before: The slope in this natural area was
prone to erosion and allowed run-off from
the driveway to enter the creek below with
minimal filtration.
Boulder terracing between the driveway and
the creek was designed to slow the run-off
down the slope, allowing more water to
infiltrate into the soil rather than running into
the creek. Mixed ferns provide filtration and
erosion control in these shaded areas.

Before: The scarlet oaks lining the old driveway were spaced
too closely and had become bothersome to the client. They
significantly limited the visibility of the rest of the property and the
use of the classic allee was note in tune with the desired style of
the property.
After: Approximately half of the oaks were relocated to new
locations on site to address the crowding issue. Now the site feels
larger and offers more views from the center looking out. The oaks
will all benefit from the new spacing arrangement and will each
broaden into unique specimens.
Tree Moving: Twenty-six Quercus nuttallii (scarlet oaks or ‘nuttall’ oaks) were salvaged from an old and overgrown arrangement along the
driveway. Due to the trees’ size and age they were much too valuable to the property to simply be removed. Instead every other tree was moved
using a 14 foot diameter tree spade [image above]. The trees’ new locations created two separate groves away from the home to serve as habitats
for the native deer population. The trees remaining in place along the driveway no longer form an allee, but rather a random arrangement as
desired by the owner. The new driveway winds through the remaining trees in a way that makes it appear as if the trees had always been there.
The tree relocation plan [right image] mapped out which trees were to be relocated and to where.

Before: This site had many challenges as the backyard sloped quickly away from the house
towards a natural wooded area. There was no connection to the outside from the home and no
incentive for the owners to venture beyond the back porch.
After [left image]: A terrace was designed to transition smoothly from the back screened
porch. The elevation of this new space provides views to the rest of the property and the woods
behind the home. Strategically positioned screening trees were planted on the side property
lines to provide a sense of enclosure and to hide the presence of neighbors on adjacent uphill
properties.

Although they pose the largest
challenges and incur the highest
up-front costs, it is the sloped sites
that ultimately become the most
interesting spaces.
The backyard was transformed
from a sloped unusable space
into a private outdoor living space
using a series of retaining walls
and steps. The project began as
an outdoor kitchen and dining
area and then grew significantly
when the owners decided to add a
custom swimming pool during the
construction of the fireplace.
The surrounding walls and
screening trees provide a sense
of enclosure in a neighborhood
with very little space between each
home. Informal steps and paths
connecting to the adjacent property
behind the home provide access
for neighbors during events in the
space.
BACKYARD TRANSFORMATION,
FALL 2013
Before: The sloped backyard served as a drainage swale and
provided little opportunity for outdoor living. The deck steps
were built in an awkward arrangement resulting in no connection
to the outdoors from the home. They also made the small patio
beneath the deck dark and uninviting.

In a particular area a 12 inch drainage pipe beneath the old driveway was expected to accommodate a 16 acre water shed, which resulted in regular flooding of the driveway. This was replaced with a bridge and a rock lined creek bed. Vegetative buffers surround the creek bed to provide filtration of surface water. Stormwater calculations were provided by Arcadia Engineers. Native stone and vegetation line all of the stormwater swales to prevent erosion of the stream banks. These channels eventually intersect a blue line stream, which is highly protected. All water on this particular site is responsibly managed and filtered prior to entering the active streams downhill. The house, by Alphin Design Build, was designed around two mature trees along the side property lines. The landscape highlights these trees and the house itself. The primary groundcover is Carex pennsylvanica (pennsylvania sedge), which was planted as a “no-mow” lawn. When compared to traditional lawn turf species this selection uses a fraction of the water, requires no fertilizer, and only needs to be mowed once per year. IRRIGATION: The roof of the house is pitched to a single collection channel so that all rain water may be harvested and stored in two large cisterns, which were designed by Rain Water Solutions. The irrigation system is designed with low flow heads and is supplied primarily with the harvested rain water.

HORTICULTURAL DESIGN PASTURE RESTORATION, SUMMER2013 Swaths of native Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem) were installed to serve as riparian buffers surrounding the creeks throughout the site. This species was also mixed into the large pasture spaces as part of a restoration project. Pollinators Seasonal color was mixed into the native grass matrix to attract pollinator species and other beneficial organisms. Restoration Plan 2013 planting plan showing overview of the pasture restoration project. The process began with removal of invasive broadleaf species. Followed by the incorporation of native grass species. Little Bluestem / Tall Fescue Muhlenbergia / Nassella

WOODLAND RESTORATION Natural areassurrounding this home were barren and provided little erosion control or filtration of run-off. Furthermore, many of the species that were growing in these areas were invasives such as Microstegium vimineum (japanese stiltgrass) and Ligustrum sinense (chinese privet). The natural areas were all inventoried and invasives were removed using mechanical and organic methods. A dense groundcover of mixed ferns was designed to compete with the invasive species and to serve as a riparian buffer around the creeks in the heavily shaded areas. Boulder terracing between the driveway and the creek was designed to slow the run-off down the slope, allowing more water to infiltrate into the soil rather than running into the creek. Mixed ferns provide filtration and erosion control in these shaded areas.

[Above] Allium giganteum (ornamental onion) emerging in the Spring as a surprise for the property owners. When not in bloom these bulbs are obscured by the surrounding grass matrix. [Left] Mixed yarrow, coneflowers, and sages planted for color all season with the extra maintenance associated with annuals. [Bottom] The Solidago canadensis (goldenrod) in the left side of the picture provides excellent verticle structure in the distance.

They significantly limited the visibility of the rest of the property and the use of the classic allee was note in tune with the desired style of the property. After: Approximately half of the oaks were relocated to new locations on site to address the crowding issue. Now the site feels larger and offers more views from the center looking out. The oaks will all benefit from the new spacing arrangement and will each broaden into unique specimens. Tree Moving: Twenty-six Quercus nuttallii (scarlet oaks or ‘nuttall’ oaks) were salvaged from an old and overgrown arrangement along the driveway. Due to the trees’ size and age they were much too valuable to the property to simply be removed. Instead every other tree was moved using a 14 foot diameter tree spade [image above]. The trees’ new locations created two separate groves away from the home to serve as habitats for the native deer population. The trees remaining in place along the driveway no longer form an allee, but rather a random arrangement as desired by the owner. The new driveway winds through the remaining trees in a way that makes it appear as if the trees had always been there. The tree relocation plan [right image] mapped out which trees were to be relocated and to where.

There was no connection to the outside from the home and no incentive for the owners to venture beyond the back porch. After [left image]: A terrace was designed to transition smoothly from the back screened porch. The elevation of this new space provides views to the rest of the property and the woods behind the home. Strategically positioned screening trees were planted on the side property lines to provide a sense of enclosure and to hide the presence of neighbors on adjacent uphill properties.

The backyard was transformed from a sloped unusable space into a private outdoor living space using a series of retaining walls and steps. The project began as an outdoor kitchen and dining area and then grew significantly when the owners decided to add a custom swimming pool during the construction of the fireplace. The surrounding walls and screening trees provide a sense of enclosure in a neighborhood with very little space between each home. Informal steps and paths connecting to the adjacent property behind the home provide access for neighbors during events in the space. BACKYARD TRANSFORMATION, FALL 2013

Before: The slopedbackyard served as a drainage swale and provided little opportunity for outdoor living. The deck steps were built in an awkward arrangement resulting in no connection to the outdoors from the home. They also made the small patio beneath the deck dark and uninviting. 0 5 10 20 SCALE 1" : 10' 0" PLANTING PLAN Scale: Date: DesignedBy: Sheet:of 1"=10'-0" 7/16/2013 PostOfficeBox727 Apex,NC27502 (919)387-0010Office 14 LABER RESID EN CE 1131 RO TH W O O D W AY APEX,N C 27502 L1 DBW N HOUSE LAWN LAWN LAWN LAWN NATURAL AREA PLAY SET UPPER PATIO LOWER PATIO SCREENED DECKPORCH FRONT WALK GARAGE DRIVEWAY ROTHWOODWAY LEYLAND SCREEN Existing Red Maple Existing Red Maple (3) Pennisetum 'Karley Rose' (1) Pennisetum 'Karley Rose' (9) Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' (9) Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' (3) Ilex x 'Robin' (1) Ilex x 'Emily Bruner' (3) Loropetalum 'Daruma' (14) Salvia 'Blue Hill' (5) Rosa 'Pink Drift' (1) Buxus 'Wintergreen' (1) Buxus 'Wintergreen' (2) Buxus 'Wintergreen' (7) Nandina 'Harbour Belle' (1) REPLANTED Cherry Remove White Oak (5) Ternstroemia gymnanthera (1) Lagerstroemia 'Sioux' (36) Liriope muscari 'Variegata' (3) Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' (10) Cyrtomium falcatum (6) Ilex attenuata 'Fosteri' (11) Jasminum nudiflorum (2) Lagerstroemia indica 'Biloxi'' (5) Juniperus virginiana 'Brodie' (5) Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan' (3) Ilex attenuata 'Fosteri' (72) Liriope muscari 'Variegata'(4) Ilex cornuta 'Needlepoint' (1) Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' (5) Ficus pumila (6) Cephalotaxus 'Prostrata' (3) Muhlenbergia capillaris AC (10) Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' (1) Cephalotaxus 'Duke Gardens' (9) Rosa x 'Radrazz' (7) Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan' LAWN LAWN (1) Perovskia atriplicifolia (13) Buxus x 'Green Mountain' (20) Muhlenbergia capillaris (3) Ilex x 'Emily Bruner' ME SIZE/SPACING 15 Gallon 10'-12' Height 8'-10' Height 25 Gallon 6'-7' Height y 6'-7' Height 7'-8' Height 8' Height od 7 Gallon wood 24" Height w 7 Gallon 7 Gallon 3 Gallon y 7 Gallon 3 Gallon er 7 Gallon 5 Gallon 3 Gallon 3 Gallon 7 Gallon 3 Gallon 1 Gallon 4" Pot, 12" o/c 3 Gallon ss 3 Gallon 1 Gallon 1 Gallon 1 Gallon Mulch Path Plans The full plan set includes a site plan, drainage, irrigation, planting, and lighting plans.
