Dallas Gets Its Own U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

The news could appear as a pleasant surprise for companies and stakeholders that are staying in Dallas, as the state is going to have its own patent office soon in an attempt to streamline the process of patenting and subsequently innovation. For the first time since it opened in 1790, the United States Patent and Trademark Office is expanding outside of Washington, D.C. The agency – which has a team of more than 8,000 patent examiners – has established regional offices in four cities across the United States.

In a latest move in the patents and trademark world, Watertown, MA based Exergen Corporation has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Taipei, Taiwan based medical equipment manufacturer Microlife for infringing its Infrared Thermometer technology without its consent. According to reports from various sources, the patent lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts in which the litigator has sought monetary compensation and injunction for using its technology unlawfully. The patent lawsuit filed by Exergen Corporation alleges that the Taipei based company has made infrared thermometers that infringe its ‘386 patent and caused such thermometers to be used, offered for sale, and sold in various parts of the United States. It is important to underline here that the thermometers which are under the scope of this lawsuit are sold in various parts of the country by Kaz USA, Inc, under the name Braun Forehead Thermometer and Vicks Forehead Thermometer. The marketer and distributor of these thermometers, Kaz USA, Inc. is a subsidiary of Helen of Troy, Ltd. of Hamilton Bermuda.
