3. Relevance of studying the
dairy development in the
country
• Dairy is an important sub-sector of Indian
agriculture, accounting for nearly 17% value
of output from agriculture and allied activities.
• Dairying has emerged as an important source
of income and employment in rural areas,
especially for marginal and small farmers.
• Small farmers about 33 percent of cultivable
land mass but account for almost 60 percent of
female cattle and buffaloes in the country.
• Dairying contributes to a third of the gross
income of rural households and nearly half of
the landless.
• ITP in the past through their research explored
the impact of irrigation on India’s mixed crop-
based dairy production system.
• The study is a endeavor to explore the dairy
development through analysis of the 19th and
20th Livestock Census.
4. Our methodology for
comprehending dairy
transformation in the country
• Draft/ Annual replenishable GroundwaterHerd
Efficiency Ratio- Number of In-Milk Bovine/Total
Female Bovine
• Stocking Ratio- Number of Bovine Heads/ Net Sown
Area
• % share of Exotic Cattle- Proportion of exotic
cattle/Total Cattle
• Density of GW structures- Total GW structures/ NSA
• Stage of Groundwater Development- Total
Groundwater
8. Next Steps of
the exersize
• Capturing the groundwater situation across the
different clusters as identified to see if
considerable access to groundwater has an
impact on the nature of dairy development.
• Preparing a section to highlight the dairy
development indicators across all the different
locations of the country within the ambit of
TRUSTS’s ecosystem where our partners are
operating.
• Preparing a Draft paper on the topic.
