Every year, 9 million dairy cows are forcibly separated from their calves shortly after birth. The cows cry out and search desperately for their babies for days. After repeated cycles of forced impregnation and milking, the cows' spirits break and their bodies weaken until their milk production declines, at which point they are sent to slaughter, still lactating and some pregnant. All dairy operations cause intentional cruelty by separating mothers from their calves for milk production and exist solely through this practice, which consumers support with their purchases.
