2. BULLION:
When the Quantitative Easing began with the advent of the financial crisis of 2008, little did
someone think that it would have in store yet another round of financial issues.
Yes, coupled with easing which saw a deluge of Dollars hitting the markets, the banks in US and
Europe brought down the interest rates to the position that it was in effect made to be practically
irrelevant. The term, ‘near-zero interest rates’ represented the situation with absolute authenticity.
But after six years of a roller coaster ride, US began to see the return of growth. Easing was tapered
and it currently stands at a monthly purchasing of $65 billion in bonds and mortgage backed
securities by Fed.
BASE METAL:
Indian Railways has maintained status quo on passenger and freight rates while announcing 72
new trains, extension of three trains and increase in frequency of three trains, in the interim Rail
Budget for 2014-15 announced by Mallikarjun Kharge, Minister of Railways in Parliament on
Wednesday.
The Budget envisages investment of Rs. 64,305 crore as against Revised Estimates for 2013-14 of
Rs. 59,359 crore. Anticipating a healthier growth of economy, the freight traffic target is proposed
at 1,101 million tonnes, an increment of 49.7 million tonnes over the current years’ revised target
of about 1052 million tonnes. The Gross Traffic Receipts have been projected at Rs. 1,60,775 crore .
Working Expenses have been proposed at Rs. 1,10,649 crore, which is Rs. 13,589 crore higher than
the Revised Estimates for the current year.
ENERGY:
Bank of America Merrill Lynch has predicted the end of US gasoline. It says that the elemental
problem with US gasoline remains the same. In spite of a small rebound in consumption in 2013,
stocks remain ample and demand is facing a “big structural decline” in the years ahead.
The bank estimates that even as US gasoline supply would continue to climb further, demand may
fall cumulatively by 0.7 mn b/d. Alternative modes of transport like electric and nat gas vehicles
would slowly begin to rule the road.
“We estimate the impact on gasoline demand will amount to less than 40 thousand b/d by 2018. This
means the bulk of US gasoline demand destruction could come after 2020, firmly entrenching the
world’s largest transportation fuel market on a permanent decline path for the next two decades,”
the report noted.
