To mesh or mess up your data organisation - Jochem van Grondelle (Prosus/OLX ...Jochem van Grondelle
Recently the concept of a ‘data mesh’ was introduced by Zhamak Deghani to solve architectural and organizational challenges with getting value from data at scale more logically and efficiently, built around four principles:
* Domain-oriented decentralized data ownership
* Data as a product
* Self-serve data infrastructure as a platform
* Federated computational governance
This presentation will initially deep-dive into the ‘data mesh’ and how it fundamentally differs from the typical data lake architectures used today. Subsequently, it describes OLX Europe’s current data platform state aimed partially towards a more decentralized data architecture, covering its analytical data platform, data infrastructure, data discovery, and data privacy.
Finally, it will see to what extent the main principles around the ‘data mesh’ can be applied to a future vision for our data platform and what advantages and challenges implementing such a vision can bring for OLX and other companies.

Due to the evolution of personalized, data-driven digital marketing, companies now have infinite amounts of personally identifiable information (PII) about their customers; and this stockpile of information continues to grow—at an exponential rate. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, the volume of business data worldwide—across all industries—doubles every 1.2 years.
But how should you use this treasure trove of data? And at what point does the information known about your consumers—and the ways you use this information—risk consumer privacy? Is there such thing as too much data?

Strategizing Big Data in Telco
Big data feels to be a very hot topic nowadays. Some industries depend on it completely, some have opportunities to roll out their strategies and execute, some just considering when it is a right time to hop in.
To my mind, Big Data is not about technology. Big data is about people generating data and data used for the benefit of people.
Big data is a pool of activities intended at processing the data a company owns (internal and external) so that to open new revenue opportunities, minimize costs and enhance UX.
I had some ideas and thoughts on what telecommunication companies may start from in formulating the Big Data Strategy and so packed some of the most important pieces of thoughts into a small presentation.
What is the difference between Small Data and Big Data?
What kind of data is used currently and which is to be relied on a new paradigm?
What kind of products are expected from telcos?
My personal ranking of operators in terms of their Big Data execution
What are the stages telcos should pass through to become a Big Data operator?
Prerequisites for Big Data transformation

The Company
Famous for its fleet of armored trucks, Brink’s is the world’s leading provider of armored transportation
services, with over 1,000 facilities in 100 countries. Brink’s clients include banks and other financial
institutions, government organizations, and retail and commercial businesses.“Brink’s provides the
most secure service available for transporting large quantities of cash and other high-value items,” says
Earl Barnes, Vice-President of Global Infrastructure at Brink’s. “In addition to armored transportation,
we offer cash processing, vaulting, reconciliation services, ATM replenishment, deposit collection, and
maintenance. We also offer CompuSafe®, our ‘smart safe’ solution, which allows customers to store
and process money in a computerized safe at their business location.”
The Challenge
Until recently, Brink’s primary IT infrastructure for its North American operations was housed at the
company’s North American headquarters in Coppell, Texas. However, as Brink’s data processing and
innovation requirements increased, the company realized it needed a more secure and more robust
data center environment, with room and power to expand its IT capacity.
“Our primary IT footprint provides e-mail and Internet access for about 200 branch offices in
the U.S., and parts of Canada and South America,” says Barnes. “It hosts all of Brink’s principal
applications, including our cash processing and financial platforms, applications that monitor ATMs for
replenishment, and applications that monitor CompuSafe® units. It also hosts applications for Brink’s
Global Services, our affiliate that handles transportation of diamonds, precious metals, and other
non-cash valuables.”
“Our clients depend on us to keep their financial data safe and available, so they need to know our
IT infrastructure will always be operational and secure. This is an important part of preserving our
reputation as the most trustworthy financial transactions company in the world.”
“We needed a highly reliable data center with sufficient space and power to enable us to quickly grow
and expand our services when needed, plus access to multiple network providers and physical security
that mitigates any intrusion risk. And we needed more than one of these facilities, because we also
needed a home for our disaster recovery operations.”

3. The Solution
Brink’s chose CyrusOne’s data center facility in Dallas, Texas,
as the new location for its primary North American IT footprint.
The Dallas facility is located only 10 miles from Brink’s Coppell
offices, making it easy for Brink’s representatives to visit and
perform IT infrastructure tests, or conduct tours for Brink’s
clients.
“We had an aggressive timeline of three months to accomplish the move. CyrusOne was able to
quickly put together a service agreement to accommodate us. They also worked with our vendors to
quickly get the space and power ready for us in the data center so we could move in our servers and
applications,” stated Barnes.
“We’ve also established a disaster recovery center in CyrusOne’s data center in Phoenix, Arizona. We
built out a new IT footprint in Phoenix and copied our applications and data over from our Dallas
footprint. Because CyrusOne was able to have this facility ready for us, we were able to drastically cut
the time it would take us to bring our new disaster recovery system online.”
Benefits
Redundant Power and Cooling
CyrusOne’s Dallas and Phoenix facilities both offer 100% uptime Service Level Agreements, and
provide multiple levels of power and cooling redundancy. Each facility has a dual-feed Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS), delivered in two individual circuits, plus on-site power sub-stations and backup
generators.
“CyrusOne’s data centers have the redundant power and cooling to keep Brink’s IT footprint
operational, no matter what happens,” says Barnes. “We’re very impressed with their facilities, and the
backups they have in place.”

4. Outstanding Customer Support
“One of the most impressive things about CyrusOne is their customer support,” says Barnes. “We did
our IT migration from Coppell to Dallas over six weekends. As we approached the weekend of our IT
operations changeover, it was clear we were going to run out of power. CyrusOne’s on-site technicians
worked over several nights to get us the power we needed in time for the changeover. They recognized
our need, and brought in the resources to make it happen on time.”
Security
In terms of physical security, both the Dallas and Phoenix facilities
are located inside reinforced concrete structures protected by
perimeter fences, steel-lined walls, and bullet resistant glass. Both
have 24/7 onsite security, and exterior/interior video surveillance.
“When we conduct tours of our IT infrastructures,” Barnes
explains, “our clients have to sign in at the data center
entrance, receive a biometric access keycard, go through security, and are escorted by authorized
personnel. Our clients are always very impressed with the security standards we enforce for accessing
our IT environment. They can see that CyrusOne’s facilities provide a very high level of security.”
“The Phoenix facility is very impressive. On the data
center floor, our IT footprint is housed inside a steel-
wall module with a biometric access door, instead of a
cage environment. This prevents unauthorized people
from looking in at our servers, and helps us limit access
to our infrastructure to authorized Brink’s employees
and vendors.”
Connectivity
In the near future, Brink’s plans to consolidate IT
operations for its nine branch offices in South America
into a new IT footprint deployed across five data
centers. Once those facilities are online, Brink’s will
connect them to their disaster recovery center in
CyrusOne’s Phoenix, Arizona facility.

– Earl Barnes, Vice-President of
Global Infrastructure at Brink’s
5. “As we move to a global IT environment, CyrusOne’s carrier neutral connectivity will be a key
component in connecting our IT footprints throughout North and South America with our backup
center in Phoenix,” says Barnes. “Also, CyrusOne has connected our IT footprints in Phoenix and Dallas,
using a dedicated site-to-site network circuit that runs between the two data centers over two separate
1 GB connections. This makes it easy for us to move data between those footprints, and to keep our
systems in sync.”
A Partner for Success
“Using CyrusOne’s services enables us to tell our customers that we have done our best to ensure
our IT infrastructure will remain up and running, and their data will be safe, secure, and available. We
can also give new customers a look at the strength and security of our IT footprints by taking them on
tours of CyrusOne’s data centers. In the future, as we move towards a service-oriented environment
which includes new Cloud and IaaS solutions, we will continue to work with CyrusOne to improve the
operations and security of our IT infrastructure.”
