The number of the total beds in the university hospitals has reached about three thousand beds of which
92% are free of charge and 8% for special or economical treatment, as well as for the contracts with both
governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The role of university hospitals is not restricted to the educational and therapeutic aspects, but its
regional role has extended to include the community service and the development of environment.
2- Resident Nephrology, in Assiut University Hospital:
 From 18th March 1996, to 24th September 1999.
Nephrology Section/Internal Medicine Department, Assiut University Hospital.
During that period, I spent 6 monthes in the other department’s sections as a resident,
fulltime Duty( 8 hours daily + 6 days 24-hours-shifts). It included ER, CCU, Intermediate
care unit, hematology/oncology, GI/Endoscopy.
The main part of the residency programme in the Nephrology section, where I spent more
than 3 years. The nephrology section provides the service to patients in the following
areas:
A) Dialysis unit, the following clinical and academic activities are done-
Hemodialysis:
 There are 35 hemodialysis machines, 75 hemodialysis treatment
every day.
 There are 2 shifts for regular patients (10 hepatitis& 40non
hepatitis)
 One shift for the acute cases (from ER, inpatients), about 5-10.
Peritoneal dialysis:
 Only intermittent peritoneal dialysis,
 There are 4 beds within the unit,
 For patients in CCU&ICU.
Renal biopsy (sonographic guided)
Renal ultrasound: we are well trained to do it. This facilitated the discrimination
of acute from chronic renal failure cases and helps us in renal biopsy as well.
B) Inpatients:
 16 beds (8 males&8females)
 For management of various renal diseases.
 For patients who needs any invasive procedure.
C) Outpatients:
The nephrology clinic take care of:
1. Follow up of inpatients after discharge from the hospital
2. Referred cases from diabetes and hypertension clinic
who are complicated by renal insufficiency for
control the progression of renal illness and
prepairing them for dialysis as well.
D) Teaching Activities: Supervision and training of the following:
