2004 – 2008 Director of Planning Services, BAA Limited
Led team of 50 staff providing specialist planning services (facilities planning,
aerodrome safeguarding, road and rail projects, statutory planning, noise blight and
air quality, airspace issues) to BAA airports; set policies and negotiated commercial
deals; protected BAA planning interests; wide range of stakeholder relations.
• Negotiated 5 year £500m aerodrome and approach control contract with NATS
for all BAA airports; led contract governance thereafter
• Initiated planning application for Airtrack (£500m T5/Staines rail link); concluded
Crossrail access to Heathrow (£250m); shaped decision on Gatwick Express
• Agreed £350m security and £80m annual contribution for Pension Fund (£2bn
assets 20,000 members) as part of BAA refinancing

Provided Executive and Board with long term financial forecasting and scenario
planning to assist them in strategic choices and funding; led team of 10 staff

Airport charges each year.
• Achieved airport charges formula of RPI +6.5% for 5 years at Heathrow;
introduced new environmental basis for charging; built extranet site for airlines.
• Procured forecasting model and completed scenario planning of external events
on BAA’s financial viability. Demonstrated to banks and credit agencies.
• Successful defence against investigations by Competition Commission and OFT.
• Established new capital planning process across BAA to take account of
regulatory approvals, financing constraints and stakeholder needs.
• Negotiated deal with HM Treasury on Windfall Tax to be paid by BAA (£95m)
1997 – 2000 Head of Information Technology, Gatwick Airport
Managed team of 25 staff comprising the IT Department, airport Y2K programme
and airline schedule and passenger forecasting.
• Implemented new IT strategy with focus on operations and product innovation.
• Introduced new business critical operational systems (check-in interfaces, flight
information, fibre optic highway).
• Led range of process improvements (e.g. airport coaching, camera technology to
mix passengers, medical services).
• Problem free Y2K transition following systematic review of engineering and IT
processes, effective fix programmes and contingency plans.
