General
Central themes in my work are life & death, suprise & alienation, looked upon from different angles.
I work with found material or own images on personal experiences/places/objects or I use
external factors to examine the borderline between life & death, reality & surreality. I like to work
unconscious because too defined borders could block new sights that are important to the development
of the work.
My work is often autobiographic, I take my self as starting point, in interaction with others, with
time.
Work
2015: Synthesis I & II.Two books, 100 pages each (colour/black & white). About the beauty of imperfection,
a temporary and incomplete beauty that has been worn by time. I attempted to accept
the natural cycles of growth, decay and death, all while capturing their traces.The acceptance is a
shrill contrast to people’s urge to create order.
2014:Weemoed (=Melancholy). Camera obscura images printed on rice paper, hung on a clothes
line.
2014: HetVijfde Seizoen (= the fifth season): manipulated field recordings + 6 manipulated photos.
I photographed the same locations for six months, and merged those images in one unreal photograph,
capturing time & season change in one image. At those locations I recorded the surrounding
traffic sounds and mixed them in one track, contrasting with the nature images.Those places
were ‘deserted’ nature spots located next to highway or heavy traffic.These series question climate
change by it’s title and it’s manipulated photography.
2014: False Belief: capturing the contrast between life & death by photographing stuffed animals
(taxidermy). Five animals, head shot + detail of the ‘stuffed’ eye, photographed with Hasselblad.
2013: Achterblijver (= the one that stays behind): photographing what’s left of my declining family,
trying to reconnect with lost family by photography. Discovering what existed before I was born.
Presented as colour pictures on a wall where black & white photographs of passed away family
members were projected on.
2012: Record Collectors. Portraits, in situ photography.Trying to capture the same vinyl record
- addiction as I have by photographing other collectors/dj’s. 5 black/white images for each photographed
collector, presented in record sleeves in a record box.
2011: Kortrijksesteenweg. Book, black & white, photographs of a typical Belgian provincial road
through hi-class villages with commercial buildings, houses, sportscar showrooms and prostitution,
where i lived at that moment in my life.
