I will try to remember when it all started. Though, I am
afraid it is not one of those stories about child prodigies.
I loved drawing, yes, probably my favourite subject was
plastic arts, right, and I used to spend hours filling in
colouring books. I was planning how to build huts in the
woods when not designing dresses for my doll collection;
I would come up with the best costume ideas for the
festivals and win the sandcastle contests of every summer;
and obviously, our family photo album used to be full of
monuments and landscapes.
A precocious architect, indeed.
More seriously, my vocation towards architecture comes
from the first wrong cut in a 1cm foam board and the first
ink blot while drafting Mies’. Above all, it arises from that
inexplicable feeling when making an idea come true. That
eagerness, sometimes repressed, others boosted, always
alive, is the one that pushes me forward. Throughout
these years, I have learnt to face challenges without
fear, to enjoy group work and be independent, to
handle stressful situations and react under pressure, to
develop a creative thinking and proactive attitude, to
be able to conceptualize and express ideas graphically,
to work with my hands but also manage technological
environments, to acquire an aesthetical sense and
experiment representation techniques.
I have never lost neither curiosity for my surroundings,
nor enthusiasm for whatever I devote my time
to. Furthermore, I am never complacent about my
performance, since I believe that in order to do something
satisfying, one must be ready to feel uncomfortable, to
stay awake. It is a matter of hunger, obsession. Therefore,
I have presented my academic projects to contests and
I am constantly broadening my knowledge, assisting
seminars, participating in workshops and studying
supplementary courses.
Conversely, my experiences abroad made me conscious
of a wider array and understand architecture through
different perspectives. The Erasmus year in Slovenia,
Porto Academy and the short-term internship in South
Africa have thus given me an emotional maturity,
adaptability, a broader cultural awareness and an
international outlook. Moreover, the UrbanBAT Festival
is a multidisciplinary meeting to put in common other
insight on the city, provided a space for debate and
exchange, a time for shared learning from the diversity of
sensitivities; consecuently, to assume architecture as a
collective activity and relational practice.
I am not interested in the architecture of egos, neither in
the one that cannot be understood nor built. We should
not design problems, but solutions. For this reason, I
want to approach a more realistic, comprehensive
and necessary practice. I would like to be part of
an interdisciplinary and intercultural working
environment, from which to research and question the
social space and urban reality; in order to foster open,
sensible and collaborative initiatives for a sustainable
development of cities.
Since polyvalence and flexibility are skills that mainly
define my profile, in addition to my technical and artistic
expertise, I consider myself to be a great asset to work
on projects related to urbanism, arts, education or
cooperation to promote culture as a catalyst of the social
context.
I am willing to demonstrate what I have learnt and in turn,
learn what I have never imagined, to listen first and then
talk,tobepassionateandsufferfromit,toaddperspectives
and detract banalities, to imagine solutions and get
frustrated with the answers, to debate and be contested,
to share views but also blindness, to progress and help
progress, to invest my time and enjoy the outcome, to be
trusted and trust in the future,...
I wish to find all this and much more in my next endeavour.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am pleased to submit this letter of support on behalf of Irati Lasa Amo,
young architect and former student at the Higher Technical School of
Architecture in San Sebastian, University of the Basque Country.
Since 2006 I am a lecturer in Architecture and Master Degree at the
University of the Basque Country, teaching Building Technology and
Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment. I have known Irati for the past
three years, as she attended the course of Construction IV, in the last year
of the Architecture Degree. As her professor and director of the Final
Degree Project, I have had the opportunity to observe the student’s
participation and interaction in class, but also to evaluate her knowledge
and evolution in the subject matter. I would rate the student’s overall
performance as exceptionally high, which is evidenced by her grades -
10/10 in Construction IV and 7.5/10 in Final Degree Project-.
During the course of Construction IV -subject taught in English- Irati
worked in group to successfully develop an industrialized and ecologically
sustainable project. The proposal Crack UP! was awarded in the 23rd Pladur
Iberian Construction Solutions Contest: 'Architectures for Encounters. Urban
Activities Centre in Coimbra'. The student showed great skills in leadership
and team work, but also the ability to communicate, express and
debate ideas, with the additional difficulty of using a foreign language.
Moreover, she exhibited enthusiasm for learning, openness to new ideas
and understanding of the instructed concepts.
I helped and guided Irati on her Final Degree Project ‘Young Habitat:
Towards a New Ecosystem’. Hence, I can assure that the student
challenged herself proposing strategies in order to reactivate and
cohabitate a depraved old town, and exploring the limits between public-
private. Though having faced many difficulties and after a deep diagnosis
of the town and research of typologies, she finally achieved an ambitious
project. She arrived to a high definition of the building, extending
beyond the required and paying attention to every detail. Over this time,
she broaden her knowledge in construction, structures and materiality
and she proved to be a goal-orientated person, determined, diligent,
capable of dealing with problems and, above all, creative and
perfectionist.

In a personal aspect, I consider Irati to be constantly seeking to push her
limits forward, trying to pursue different perspectives and ready to give
the best of her. It is also evident his marked persistence, healthy
competition and sensibility in work. Having witnessed her evolution during
this late years, I can certainly state that she is a competent, honest and
committed person. I have confidence in her future opportunities and I
believe she will achieve anything she proposes.
Therefore, I highly recommend that you consider Irati Lasa Amo's
application. I am strongly confident that with the level of knowledge,
endurance, motivation and dedication that I know of her, she will be a great
asset.
However, should any further information be required, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
