Renal cell carcinoma is not a single disease but has several histologic subtypes. Studies over the past two decades have identified five inherited renal cancer syndromes caused by mutations in specific genes. These include von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, hereditary papillary renal carcinoma, Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, and mutations in tricarboxylic acid cycle enzyme genes. Identification of the mutated genes in familial forms of renal cell carcinoma has provided insights into renal carcinogenesis and helped guide clinical management.
Kidney cancer forms when cells in the kidneys become malignant and grow uncontrollably. Symptoms often do not appear until the cancer has spread, and can include lumps, pain, weight loss, and blood in the urine. Diagnosis involves CT scans, MRI, and other tests to determine if the cancer has spread. Treatment options depend on stage and may include surgery to remove part or all of the affected kidney, cryotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, or other therapies if the cancer has metastasized. Sveriges Internationella Talanger (SIT) launched its LinkedIn group in April 2014, and from the September panel discussion, has summarized its learnings in this presentation for foreign born individuals trying to enter the Swedish labor market. SIT focuses on educated immigrants who bring their qualifications to Sweden in order to continue their careers. Having discovered what hindrances they face, SIT was founded on the premise of building networks and sharing information. The LinkedIn group is where the talent pool is centralized. Through its activities, SIT gives its members- and all foreign born educated professionals here in Sweden- a voice. We say that it is not just morally right that businesses reflect the composition of society, but that it is actually a smart best practice.
