My Inspiration and Goals
From a young age I have been passionate about the natural world and the life which inhabits it. My
two inspirations come from firstly my uncle. He shares a similar passion for nature and taught me
how to enjoy the natural world. My second inspiration was Steve Irwin. This stemmed from the
admiration I have for him of how passionate he was about educating the public about conservation. I
feel that I share a similar philosophy on how to value animals and their environments around the
world.
This led me to studying the course I did at University. There I learnt how humans are effecting the
planet and its ecosystems, through many different ways. On the other hand I also learnt the ways in
which we can help rectify these global problems. I also learnt much about how animals and the
dynamics of nature work through ecological principles and animal behaviour. Armed with these two
resources it is my ambition to go to Africa and work on a game reserve, educating not just tourists but
locals. By making them passionate about the natural world and teaching them how they can help.
However first I wish to gain valuable experience by participating in other conservation projects
around the world.
Experiences and Skills Gained
In 2009 I completed the Ten Tors expedition across Dartmoor national park. This
consisted of a small group of us independently completing a 30km trek across the
landscape. I gained valuable skills in orientation and map reading as well as how to keep
safe in such an inhospitable area.
In 2011 I participated in an Operation Wallacea expedition to Honduras. Here I spent a
week in the cloud forest helping post-graduates collect data, this involved; bird and bat
mist netting, small mammal trapping and ecological surveys on forest structure. The
second week was spent diving on the coast, where I achieved my PADI open water diving
certification.
In 2012 I visited South Africa where I spent two weeks working with the Askari
conservation programme. Here I learnt valuable identification skills, habitat management
processes and helped conduct ongoing mammal surveys and projects. As well as this I
also assisted in the darting and translocation of game, which gave me valuable
experience in handling of large mammals.
In 2013, my university took me to southern Spain where we had to conduct our own field
experiments and present our findings accordingly. In 2014 my university also took us to
Mexico where a variety of field experiments were undertaken both in rainforest and
mangrove environments.
I am currently in the process of writing my dissertation, in which I have been using
MaxEnt and GIS software to map the distribution of the African Wild Dog. I have become
confident in the use of this software and am aware of its applications for future
conservation purposes.
I have been involved in several citizen science projects which incorporated working with
primary school children to conduct scientific activities. I also produced my own survey that
was given to the public which involved exploring what species are in people’s Garden
ponds.
Other skills I have gained from university include the use of population viability models to
help population management schemes and how to conduct a successful scientific
experiment that produces useful outcomes.
