Public Speaking (COM 242), Cleveland State: Spring 2010.
Communication 242 is a public speaking course designed to teach the basic elements of
speech composition and delivery as well as to provide opportunities for “practical
application”. Students delivered six different styles of speeches throughout the
semester that were critiqued by class members and the instructor.
Interpersonal Communication (COM 211), Cleveland State: Fall 2010, 2011, 2012,
2013. Spring 2011, 2012 (online), 2013.
Communication 211 examines the fundamental role of communication in establishing
and maintaining personal relationships. Conceptual perspectives examined included
communicative competence, relational development, interaction process, codes, and
context. This course surveyed the leading research and theories in interpersonal
communication, and engaged students in the detailed analysis of how individuals enter
into, maintain, and terminate relationships in various contexts: organizational,
community, and personal. Students completed three major writing assignments. The
first assignment had students design, conduct, and then analyze experiments that broke
normative behavior in nonverbal communication, a second was applying course
concepts to a popular film, and a third was a group assignment. Student teams
developed a model based in theory to explain why particular concepts, ideas, or
theories are crucial to developing healthy relationships.

2. Professional Communication (COM 240), Cleveland State: Fall, 2015
Communication 240 is a writing across the curriculum course with three major writing
assignments: a professional interview analysis, a formal resume and cover letter, and a
team presentation reflection paper. The course exposed students to the theories, skills
and strategies needed to become effective communicators in professional settings. This
course also provided skills to assist students with their professional development such
as a mock job interview and a team sales pitch.
Communicating in Organizations (COM 346), Cleveland State: Spring 2011, 2016.
Communication 346 is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the
interface between human behavior and the organization, leadership styles within
organizations, and the organization itself. The course was designed to help students
develop a better understanding of the challenges faced by organizational members, and
a working knowledge of the theoretical approaches which guide behaviors and decision
making in organizations. Students developed a vocabulary and understanding of
concepts related to organizational phenomena, became familiar with historical
perspectives still having influence today, gained experience with applying theoretical
perspectives and concepts to organizational situations and contemporary organizational
issues. Students researched, participated in, and analyzed a for-profit or non-profit
organization. They then applied knowledge of the course concepts, theories, or ideas to
explanations of the organization. Case studies were also utilized throughout the
semester.
Group Process/Decision Making (COM 341), Cleveland State: Spring 2015, 2016.
Communication 341 was an online course focused on helping students develop
techniques for interacting in small group situations. Included in this course was an
understanding of research methods, leadership, group roles, conflict resolution and
decision-making process. Specifically, this course examined the structure and dynamics
of groups and group behavior. Students were randomly assigned a group by the end of
the first week. As a group, they analyzed a case study and produced a PowerPoint Film
Analysis. Student Teams chose from a list of approved films and analyzed group
behavior utilizing course concepts
Gender and Communication (COM 331), Cleveland State: Spring 2015.
Communication 331 explores interactions among gender, communication, and culture
with an emphasis on how gender roles are enacted. We explored multiple ways cultural
prescriptions for gender are embodied in and reproduced by communication in
institutions such as families, schools, and media. We also considered how individuals
enact socially created gender in public and private settings and what this implies for
personal identities, relationships, and society. Students wrote a reaction paper wherein
they were assigned to watch a movie that related to course content, critiquing it
considering relevant course material.
Intercultural Communication (COM 348), Cleveland State: Fall 2016.
Communication 348 examines cultural variables and the way they interact in a wide
variety of contexts: organizations, communities, and personal contacts. It focused on
the ways in which intercultural context exerts a profound influence on individuals,
messages, message effects, and international patterns of information flow, surveying

3. the most essential and critical components of cultural influences on communication.
Special attention was given to theoretical explanations and intercultural phenomena in
mass communication as well as group, organizational, and face-to-face interaction.
Writing assignments included a family history report and a cultural profile of a modern
nation.
Managing Organizational Teams (COM 448), Cleveland State: Spring, 2016
Communication 448 was a capstone course that focused on groups and teams in
organizations, with attention paid to understanding strategies for building a
team and solving problems a team may be experiencing. Students developed skills in
both using group/team dynamics to inform organizational issues and assessing and
addressing problems that groups/teams of all types face. Students used Excel to
calculate the average responses of team members to surveys, illustrate results using bar
charts, and interpret the results. They also developed a data-based case study of a team
that identified a problem the team was facing and propose an appropriate intervention.
