Main research:
1945-1960: investigation of the structure and dynamics of the solar atmosphere by
spectroscopic techniques. Study of formation of spectral lines. Establishment of standard
models of the solar photosphere. Study of the heating mechanism of the solar corona.
1960-present: Investigation of the dynamic features of the solar atmosphere, particularly solar
flares, by the means of space research. Establishment of the conditions and the mechanisms
leading to the impulsive phase of solar flares. Description of conditions for partial reconnection
between current-carrying loops.
1978 - present: Study of the most luminous stars (super- and hypergiants) by spectroscopic
techniques from ground and space based observatories. Determination of the motion field of
such stars, consisting of shock waves and gravity waves. Study of the conditions leading to the
instability of the atmospheres of these stars.
Discovery of the 'yellow evolutionary void' in hypergiant evolution; explanation of micro-
turbulence by shock-waves and development of the mechanism of shock-wave initiated mass
loss.
2003 – present: study of sun – climate relationships. Discovery of main role UV variation on
climate. Study of solar dynamo.
