Short Bio:
Elizabeth Swearingen is currently adjunct faculty in the Foundational Studies Program at Boise
State University and brings a strong interdisciplinary focus including art, education,
design, social theory, critical media studies, and anthropology. Elizabeth received her Ed.
D. in 2004 from University of California, Davis and California State University, Fresno
Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Educational
Anthropology. Elizabeth joined the Foundational Studies Program at Boise State in
spring 2013 and is currently teaching UF200 Civic and Ethical Foundations. Elizabeth
previously taught within the Women’s Studies Program at California State University,
Fresno beginning in 2002 after teaching Textiles, Design, and Social Psychology of Dress
for three years in CSU, Fresno’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Dr.
Swearingen has taught a number of courses in Women’s Studies including: Introduction
to Women’s Studies, Critical Thinking Gender Issues, Diversity in the United States,
Critical Media Studies, and Women and Religion. Dr. Swearingen’s research focuses on
critical pedagogy at the intersection of the body as a raced, classed, and gendered text in
performance of education, religion, war, and history. Elizabeth has been active in grass
roots activism including Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Occupy
Fresno, Fresno Freedom Schools, Ecumenical Councils, and Women’s Spirituality.
