Do you think your culture is well represented in
the US?
“Yes. I don’t feel we are in any kind of spotlight on my culture at all. We are pretty underexposed, and I like it
that way. I have family that live in other states like New Jersey, New York, and California and still I haven’t
heard anything about them being not well represented. I think Filipinos lie pretty under the radar.” (Collins,
2021)

How is your culture portrayed to the media?
“My culture is not really portrayed or represented like how the Chinese or Japanese culture has been
represented. I think the Chinese get more representation than the Filipinos do. We are the type of Asians that
haven’t received any hate.” (Collins, 2021)

some cultures, food, and other traditions like our Catholicism. I don’t think as a young girl or as an adult woman
I have ever experienced any oppression, but my greatest privilege has been to come to the U.S.” (Collins, 2021)

What is your current social standing regarding
oppression and privilege?
“I don’t have a social standing regarding oppression or privilege. To have lived here in the U.S. is the best
privilege my family and I have had. If I had to name any oppression it is to those that have had to stay behind on
the island and couldn’t afford to come to the U.S." (Collins, 2021)

this culture?
What is the best way anyone can be an ally to
this culture?
”I was involved in the Filipino society for many years and the biggest thing that we would advocate and show to
the community is our cultural dancing and food. If anything, it would just be to support our food and the arts, it’s
the biggest part of our culture. We are a nation are just so diverse there are more that 1,700 dialects over all the
islands, but culturally, the arts are shared. So, in a way I feel I sometimes could call myself and relate to the
Hispanics a lot. After the Spaniards ruled in the Philippines, a lot of our last names have Spanish roots and some
of our language too.” (Collins, 2021)

8. Conclusion
Conclusion
Mrs. Collins has always been a great family friend and I have one or two Filipino friends, but she is really immersed in
her culture by speaking the language almost every day and practicing her customs at church. One thing about the
Filipinos I admire is that they are always making everyone feel like they are family. In complete transparency, when I
would attend her family functions, I would honestly feel like I was with my own Hispanic family.
Things that stood out to me was the fact that the Filipino culture has no representation at all, they ARE under radar! I
don’t think I have ever heard or single thing about them in the media or have had a spotlight throughout any of the U.S.
Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it doesn’t seem to bother her or any of her family that they don’t have
a spotlight. Also, when I have heard her speak her dialect I have picked up on some Spanish words (although they don’t
translate into appropriate English words) I can see where the Spanish had an influence on their language.
This culture quest has led me to realize that there are so many diverse cultures in the world, even within one’s nation,
that not are equally represented. I’ve come to realize not all representation and media spotlight is ok either. It’s
perfectly ok to be under the radar and enjoy your culture in a pure form so that you can live in peace without hate.
