In this course, you’ll learn about the different ways families interact, both with children and without children. Some are the traditional family made up of two married parents and their children, but there are several different and varied family types. These include single-parent families, stepfamilies, and same-sex couples and families.
Regardless of the type of family, all families must complete some family tasks and develop the skills and foundations necessary to complete those tasks. These common tasks are essential to the function of every family. However, the ways they are completed are unique to each family.
In this lesson, you will learn to understand how the family functions as a system, as you develop an understanding of family systems theory. You’ll learn about family tasks, and the strategies different families employ to complete those tasks. Topics covered include:

Family systems theory, developed by Dr. Murray Bowen, states that the individual cannot be understood outside of the context of the family. The family is a single, functional emotional unit, and all parts impact and change one another. All types of families, both traditional and non-traditional, function as systems.

The concept of gender identity is still one area that is still largely being explored mainly due to its vastness. Being an important element in society, it has been discussed and many have tried to explain it the best they can. The publications by Holly Devor offer beneficial insights into this subject. As a professor in sociology, she stands qualified to point some of the issues or items required to understanding the concept of gender in society. She proposes that despite anatomical features being largely responsible for defining sex or gender of individual’s society seems to play a more important role in this subject. To back up her suggestions she gives information demonstrating the role of society in shaping gender roles as well how these roles are perceived and taken up by individuals.
In her publication, she begins by giving the pillars of gender in society and one information that controls the subject of gender as she points is that of being binary. Under this principle, she introduces two major concepts in the discussions of sex and gender, which are masculinity and femininity (Dover, 2001). Under these two classification individuals in society are highly expected to identify themselves with either one or the other category. This process begins at an early age and though biological and more specifically anatomical features should control it there is an overwhelming societal influence that dictates how an individual perceives masculinity or femininity. She goes on to back up these suggestions by analyzing how children develop and settle in to their specific gender categories.
According to Devor, “children start identifying their identities between the ages of eighteen months and two years” (Dover, 2001). Such a step is facilitated by several factors and most revolve around the concept of acquired behavior, which is socially driven. Here boys start to identify themselves as boys according to external expectations and orientations as well as internal perception, the very same applies for girls (Dover, 2001). When both the external forces, which are based on society and culture norms and expectations match with the internal forces of self-perception then individuals eventually identify themselves as either female or male. The study she pointed proves this as children who were asked to identify the gender identities of dolls focused more on the features, which are the social standards for gender such as long hair, dresses among others. However, there is a considerable change in this fact in today’s society mainly because such features have largely diminished in terms of their ability to be used as standards for identifying gender identities. For example, it is common to find men with long hair or wearing attire, which is mostly associated with women due to changes in fashion, preference among other factors. The summer that I turned 13, my father sat my 12-year-old sister and me down and showed us how to make a weekly schedule in which we laid out our week’s activities of chores, swimming at the community center, and trips to the library. Every Sunday night, he would ask us how our schedule had helped us keep track of what we did with our time. He would then have us make up a new schedule for the coming week. That habit of thinking purposefully about how I spend my time has stood me in good stead for the past 40 years as I tackled the multiple responsibilities of running a household, raising children, and having a demanding career.
Like this successful professional woman in her late 50s, every one of us can tell a story about the lessons our families have taught us about managing our lives. Through one’s family, children learn who they are, where they fit into society, what kinds of futures they are likely to experience, and how to plan for those futures. Although families have frequently been blamed for children’s academic difficulties, particularly when families are poor and not consistently involved with the school, most educators are not exactly sure how families, particularly those of oppressed minorities, shape their children’s future. How do families prepare their children to be successful academically? What do families, especially families who are very poor or are headed by a single parent or a grandparent, do at home to groom their children for school success?
A considerable body of research is now available that describes how families who vary in structure and social background rear children who are academically successful and socially adjusted. The purpose of this chapter is to examine what we have learned about such families. We first look at how, since the early 1960s, family researchers have changed their research perspective and moved from looking only at the surface characteristics and deficits of families to looking at the internal lives of families. Next, we discuss family system theory and ecological systems theory, and how these two theories have become the major theoretical frameworks that organize how researchers have studied .

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

- 2. GOAL Students will analyze, write and discuss about general and specific information about family and how it has changed using audiovisual and written materials on topics related to the changes families have experienced over the past few years, from traditional families to modern families, how these changes have affected society, and why these changes have occurred.
- 3. UNIT SCENARIO There has been a significant change in family structure over the last few years that has modified the role of families into society drastically, and at the same time it has created a lot of controversy around the world.
- 4. GUIDING QUESTIONS How are traditional families different from modern families? How can families be classified nowadays? How have family changes affected society? Why has family structure changed?
- 5. CULMINATING ACTIVITY CHANGING FAMILIES ARTICLE Students will write an article explaining why families have changed recently. Students will work in pairs and write a brief summary of approximately 100 words outlining their conclusions from this study of the changes in family structure. Indicate how these trends were influenced by different factors using the information seen in the thematic unit, or guiding questions. Then pairs should read their articles to the class as their classmates take notes. Once all pairs have read their articles, students start discussing why family changes occurred.
