Cuba is an island in the West Indies located 90 miles south of Florida. Havana is the capital city. The island is mountainous in the southeast and south-central areas, and flat or rolling elsewhere. Cuba exports sugar, nickel, tobacco, medical products, and citrus fruits and imports petroleum, food, and machinery. Spanish is the official language, though many Cuban business people also speak English. Cuba has a socialist government guided by Marxist-Leninist principles and the Communist Party is the leading political force. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion. Cuban music varies widely in genres from reggae to traditional styles and incorporates guitars and percussion instruments.
