It encourages members to connect on social media for updates on events, promotions and information relevant to their business.
Bricks and clicks, online and offline, mobile and good old-fashioned customer service are joining up. If ever proof was needed that omnichannel – a single view of the
customer, of sales and of the brand, regardless of channel – is driving new retailing, then Christmas 2013 was it.
Changes in the way customers shop and behave reached a tipping point and online/offline hybrids like click-and-collect, as well as mobile commerce dominated the Christmas shopping landscape. The clear winners were those who captured the omnichannel zeitgeist, like Next and John Lewis Partnership, whose click-and-collect saw a 61.8 per cent increase in orders on last year.
Amazon also announced a record-setting holiday season, with 426 items per second ordered worldwide on Cyber Monday. Amazon Prime, the annual membership program offering unlimited free Two-Day Shipping, attracted more than a million new customers around the world in the third week of December.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The first six weeks of 2014 has seen announcements from Tesco and Waitrose, entering into partnership with Transport for
London to open grocery collection points at London underground stations. Stores are transforming – with a new innovation store in Preston for Morrisons and
a ‘technology playground’ from Verizon providing just a couple of examples. Apple and Amazon are making inroads into the mobile payment market. And Amazon continues to play the role of retail pioneer, with new fulfilment initiatives that leave many of the high street stalwarts in its wake.
Nowhere is this transformation clearer than in the new talents and capabilities that top teams need to thrive, flourish and steer retail brands to success in today’s market. It is time to remove vertical silos and improve integration through cross-functional teams. Omnichannel’s need for increased collaboration, and shared information from a single, centralised knowledge base, goes right to the heart of organisational design.
Why Online Networking
Thousands of people are looking for the real opportunity of making money on the internet.
To make money on the internet you only need three things:
1. A marketable product or service.
2. A marketing website.
3. Stable customer base.
If any of the above conditions is missing, the online money making will not work.
I have got good news, we can provide you all of the three conditions.

From the Corner Office…
A
s I reflect on the first half of the year and where
we are to date, I can’t help but think of the
typical year-over-year events that take place
in each of our lives, as well as those exceptional ones
that come along only once in a lifetime. So too have I
recently reflected on AFFLINK, both within our team
and with our Members and Suppliers.
January took many of us to Phoenix, and another
successful National Planning Meeting with a record
number of attendees and some of the best feedback
we have ever received. Our travels together in
Ireland as part of New Latitudes put another great
trip in the books. And now, as you can imagine, our
team is hustling around in Tuscaloosa getting ready
to host yet another great Summit.
As we continue to make 2016 a great year for us
all, I encourage each of you to take a moment and
reflect on the events from the first half of the year
in your own lives and businesses – recalling births,
weddings, business successes, etc. Reflection can
be a motivational act, and
can teach us something if we
allow ourselves the freedom
to listen to its guidance.
These thoughts have
recently led me to become
more energized. And
I’m excited to have an opportunity to share in
that excitement with you at Summit. My hope is
that when you leave Toronto, you too will have
a heightened sense of enthusiasm for all that’s
available to help grow your business, preparing
you to meet tomorrow’s challenges with a full head
of steam!
I look forward to catching up with each you
personally over the course of Summit, and wish you
all safe travels as we convene later this month in
beautiful Canada!
...meet tomorrow’s
challenges with a
full head of steam!
Sincerely,
Dennis

Sales & Operations
T
he mantra in Tuscaloosa is that we work for you.
Whether a Distributor, Preferred Supplier, or End User,
your AFFLINK Tuscaloosa team spends our days in service
to you and your business. A little over a year ago, we divided
our field representation into the following segments: Member
Development Managers and Vertical Directors and Business
Development Managers.
Our Member Development Managers focus on and have final
responsibility for all distributor activities. These individuals know
your business and your market best. They are important allies in the
development of the independent distributor and are dedicated to
helping you succeed.
Next is our vertical field sales team. The focus of each AFFLINK
vertical is to identify and generate demand for all of our AFFLINK
customers: Distributors, Preferred Suppliers and End Users.
Leading each vertical is a Director who serves as your expert in
that market. AFFLINK takes great pride in hiring each due to their
professionalism, market leadership, and commitment to drive
growth to our Distributors and Preferred Suppliers. We have teams
within AFFLINK supporting each of these verticals with a focus and
expectation from each of them to provide the highest value and
service possible to each of you.
As we all prepare for Summit and all that comes with it in
regard to meetings, dinners, social events, etc., we hope you will
take special effort to meet and get to know each of the following
faces. Networking and relationship building at Summit opens
opportunities throughout the balance of the year. Our internal
numbers prove that the number of touches with our Directors is in
direct proportion to that company’s overall growth as it relates to
other AFFLINK Distributors, Preferred Suppliers or End Users.
We look forward to seeing you and getting to know you more
in Toronto!
Remember, we work for you. If ever my team or I may be of
assistance, feel free to call me directly at 205-344-4255.

All segment introduction videos moved to ELEVATEProcess.com to
give the end-user background on the ELEVATE process.
The Explore section now comes after the Discover section to increase
product exposure and features a miniature roof-off image.
Universal Business Needs will now default to a ranking based on
segment. End-Users still have the ability to answer the questions to
determine their UBNs. Names of UBNs have been expanded to be
more self-explanatory.

We have now completed four very
successful Advanced Packaging/CPC
training programs. So far, we have trained 62
sales professionals, representing AFFLINK and
eleven of its Members. Of these participants,
46 have attained Certified Packaging
Consultant status.
The Advanced Packaging/CPC Training is
an application based sales training program
conducted by Mark Matthews of NuVision
Strategies. The curriculum covers the five major
product groups in Industrial Packaging Sales
(Corrugated, Stretch, Shrink, Protective Packaging/
Cushioning, and Tape), and includes hands-on
learning sessions, as well as sales role-play
opportunities. Each product module concludes
with an exam to assess comprehension of the
subject matter. Participants successfully
completing the exams in all segments are
conferred the designation of Certified Packaging
Consultant (CPC). This certification replaces
our previous designation as Certified Packaging
Specialist. The CPC certification exemplifies an
individual’s mastery of the body of knowledge
required of an experienced sales professional in
the Packaging marketplace.

AFFLINK is proud to announce that our five year strategic partnership
with Southern Logistics Group (SLG) has worked significantly well for our
Members looking to reduce their Less Than Truckload (LTL) costs.
SLG is a logistics technology consulting company (not a broker) that
focuses on cost reduction for its customers by leveraging millions of
dollars of its customers' combined LTL freight. In order to provide
a specialized service to smaller AFFLINK Members, SLG has formed
a strategic partnership with another large logistics company. This
partnership allows SLG to provide immediate LTL pricing for our Members
that want to reduce their LTL cost, but because of their smaller size or
operational practices would prefer a transactional shipment by shipment
payment arrangement rather than SLG’s normal Gain-Share/Contingency
savings model.

Meet our Supplier Champion:
Mick Arnold
Iwas born into packaging distribution. I still
remember climbing on the stacks of cardboard,
riding alongside the receiving guys on the
forklifts and making boomerangs out of plywood in
our crating department. I have been around 39 out
of our 83 years in business.
I used to love holidays like President’s Day
because it meant I got to go into work with my
Dad because we were off of school but Arnold’s
Factory Supplies was still open. Monday’s were
always my favorite because I knew all the Supplier
Reps were going to be in the office. That was the
day we had sales meetings and our sales force was
in the office all morning.
There were five 3M Reps, two Sealed Air Reps, a
Jiffy rep, Signode, St. Regis Paper, Marsh, and a
bunch of others. All of the manufacturers had local
representation in those days and the channel was
so synergistic. Each side knew every opportunity,
next steps and who was doing what. The trust
level was very high and the channel was very
orderly. While we had other local distribution
competitors, there were few, and it was respectful.
We competed aggressively but fairly with helping
the customer being the ultimate goal.
Our succession was thrust into full motion when
my Father died unexpectedly when I was 24
years old. With no siblings in the business, I was
faced with the decision to sell or stay and fight
to survive. Those same suppliers were there to
support me, teach me and share resources to help
me stave off extinction. And those suppliers, along
with customers and friends, shut down a major
highway in Maryland as part of a 200+ car funeral
procession that overran the Veterans Cemetery.
Thanks to that support, we are very alive and five
times larger today.
When I was presented with the chance to be
the Supplier Champion for E2 I jumped at the
opportunity. This group of future leaders is
intelligent, aware and fierce. As a group, our
mission is to support each other, learn together
and share the ideas and resources that will make
traditional distribution more attractive and relevant
to suppliers. We will differentiate ourselves and our
suppliers’ products to ensure market domination
and effective succession by each member into the
top leadership roles in our respective organizations.
I look forward to being the conduit for Suppliers
to our talented group of E2 members. Together
we can understand current and future markets
to design and execute plans that thrive long into
the future.
While our organization has successfully navigated
the succession process, I have three daughters that
I hope will take some interest in our distribution
business and want to carry it well into our
second century. I hope that my association with
E2 will better prepare me for our next round of
succession. In the meantime, I look forward to
strengthening Distributor and Supplier partnerships
at AFFLINK.

25. 23summer 2016
Meet our Education Champion:
Derek G. Arnold
Who am I? From an early age, I was taught
the importance of living each day to the fullest.
“Every day when you wake, up you get to choose
whether it will be a good day or a bad day.”
That’s what my father used to tell me and my
siblings as we were growing up. It’s a simple
philosophy, but so very true and something I live
by to this day. Each morning I wake up and I
expect today to be better than the day before it.
What’s my story? I graduated from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison (On Wisconsin!),
where I met my wife, Steph. We are blessed with
two beautiful children: Jackson (6) and Katie (3).
My family is the most important part of my life.
After college, I spent 10 years in banking before
I joined the family business. My life has never
been more fulfilling since making that move.
Outside of work, I love music, playing guitar, golf
and the Badgers.
Who is American Paper & Packaging
(AP&P)? At its core, AP&P is a family business.
Not just because I get to work with my Dad (and
role model) every day, but because we believe
that everyone we affect (employees, customers,
suppliers) should be treated like they are family.
We reflect that in our values:
• Our Customers…The focus of everything
we do!
• Our People…Our most valued resource!
• Our Stakeholders…A superior business partner
to those who depend on us!
• Our Company…Preserving our small company
heritage of simplicity, agility and leanness, as
we grow and compete.
What’s next? We are very excited about the
future! Every day presents a new and exciting
challenge that gives us the opportunity to
improve AP&P. Every day we wake up and ask
how we can make today better than the day
before it.

Community Involvement
Myrtlewood Elementary
To celebrate Teacher Appreciation week AFFLINK aimed
at starting the teacher’s day off right with fresh
“Hot Now” donuts from Krispy Kreme.
To show their appreciation, students at Myrtlewood Elementary made
artwork that AFFLINK is displaying at our corporate office in Tuscaloosa.
The Junior League of Tuscaloosa
AFFLINK compiled a team (accurately named #KickAFF)
of 20 paddlers, plus one drummer to race in an authentic
46-foot long Chinese dragon boat to help raise money
for the Junior League of Tuscaloosa. After 2 rounds of
intense racing, the team finished with an average time
of 1:13:01.
By donating to the Junior League of Tuscaloosa the
organization can continue to make an impact in the
community by building playgrounds with Nick’s Kids,
supporting the new YMCA, and even creating an outdoor
library at Holt Elementary School.
