2. Summery of Report: Over 120 UCLA
Hospital Staff Saw Celebrity Health
Records
More than 120 workers at a LA Hospital looked
at celebrities’ medical records and other
personal information without permission.
Kathleen Billingsley stated,“What’s startling to
us is, as we get to a point where we feel we’ve
addressed a specific compliant and a specific
issue, we identify additional issues”.
One employee looked at records of about 900
patients “without and legitimate reason” and
viewed Social Security number, health
insurance information and addresses.
3. According to Medical
Dictionary, Confidentiality
is the principle in medical
ethics that the information a
patient reveals to a health
care provider is private and
has limits on how and when
it can be disclosed to a third
party.
4. Training to avoid
violations of privacy
All staff members should have
annual training on confidentiality.
That training will include access t
patient personal information and
HIPAA rules and regulations.
What will happen in the case of
someone violating a patient’s
privacy.
5. How the training is going
to be effective
By incorporating
some sense of fun
(games and
giveaways) the
staff is rewarded
for understanding
the importance of
patient privacy.
Also periodic
initiatives such as
paid off day, gift
cards or anything
that motivates the
employees would be
useful. The
employees would be
working for this long
term goal in the short
term.
