ECLOF Lanka shares lessons learned from providing loans to over 7,000 people recovering from the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka. Some key points:
1. Repayment rates for disaster loans were much lower than usual (under 50% vs typical 95%) due to trauma, handouts creating entitlement mindsets, and economic difficulties.
2. It's important to offer both grants and loans after disasters, provide business training, and have a long-term lending relationship to build confidence and encourage full repayment.
3. ECLOF Lanka worked with groups and cut interest rates to help rebuild livelihoods. Most borrowers have been able to restart businesses in farming, trading and handicrafts.
