A massive wildfire in Crowsnest in 2003 generated flames that reached 50 meters high with the energy of an atomic explosion, burning through 20,000 hectares every 30 minutes and causing panic, shock and confusion. While the fire destroyed the local lumber industry, it created ecological diversity by enriching the undergrowth in the burned areas.
