- 3. WE’RE MAPPING RURAL TANZANIA. WHY? • Tanzania Development Trust funds grassroots organisations in the poorest areas of rural Tanzania where there are no other international NGOs working. • Typical projects include bore holes for villages without water, solar for clinics so women don’t have to give birth in the dark, desks so school children don’t have to sit on the floor. • These remote villages are EXTREMELY poorly mapped. • Local officials lack maps of their area.

- I’m Janet, Egle unfortunately can’t be here. Volunteer with TDT and visit Tz twice a year. This is our Safe House in Mugumu, has protected over 400 girls from nearby villages since it opened less than 2 years ago.
- She was working on citizenscience projects. I complained about lack of maps in rural Tanzania and how communities there are affected by Deforestation, climate change, Suggested working together and Crowd2map was born.
- Sometime hand drawn map on wall, often not. Getting lost driving through rivers in the rain. Asked local reps to draw map of where village was, they couldn’t
- Thanks to great work of Ramani Huria who have supported us.
- When told Egle she didn’t believe me how bad the maps were. Most still looks like this – need stats for points added..
- Zeze village – 8000 subsistence farmers, 42 km off grid, huge problems of water first time I went completely blank, Nov 15 looks like above due to Missing maps project to map area around Burundi refugee camp added roads in Kigoma, but no village names or other amenities. So useless for finding a particular village but a great start..
- Adding points on Epicollect, interest from fellow travellers on daladala etc
- People incentivized to add points by competition.
- People had never seen a map of their village but great interest in maps, demo OSM EMR: you might get questions about these things. Like – how did you train them? How many people? How many laptops? What editor? How did they do? Did you/they continue to do it ?
- EMR: did you say anything about this ? I don’t recall
- Biggest project, outreach in villages, no maps
- EMR: prepare for Qs about open data. Where did you get it from? Was it government-collected? Are you sure it is usable? Did you consider importing it straight to OSM (not manual)? Is that all the data you got? How recent is it? Are you still accessing other open data from elshwere ?
- EMR: how many volunteers? How did you engage them ?
- EMR: Why did you start with Epicollect at all? (say it was for a pilot project, and it was an easily accessible platform for general data collection, suitable for less literate (easy to use app) users etc.)

- Maps me brilliant now you can add points, but list not that suitable for rural Africa..
- say more on Mapping competition how much are people contributing EMR: how many people? How well are they engaging? Are the points accurate? Reliable ?

- Set up a FB group EMR: don’t forget to say it is useful for sharing screenshots of unidentified villages, which then can be identified by participants
- And wa EMR: is it effective for communicating with locals? Why? (I’m sure you can provide many benefits :D )

- Continuing mapping after the event … Remarkable coverage compared to before 2016; Mara stands out in the map of Tanzania Almost no buildings or roads mapped before we started working on the region. Peak during our mapathon, of course EMR: you could get some wise-nerds explaining you how these new OSM analytics work, but just nod along I think :D it is irrelevant to the project. The stats are clear though.

- EMR: do girls actually use handed out maps? Were there actual villages Rhobi’s team didn’t know about? Can you give more details of how they used the maps? (Just thinking what mean/detailed questions they might ask )

- Add/delete as you see fit! I only care that ExCiteS (Muki) be in here, since he helped us set up the project & mapathon, and Technarium, since they have been very supportive of the idea and want to host more mapathons … We should say “thank you to all volunteers who have made this happen” …
