Editor's Notes

  1. ***INDIVIDUALISM The French prefer to be dependent on the central government, an impersonal power centre which cannot so easily invade their private life………. Having helps from government when needed *** lil shit nearly all the time! 1.France’s official name is the French Republic (République Française). It became a republic in 1792, after centuries of royal rule, as a result of the French Revolution. The Revolution started with the storming of the Bastille fortress on 14th July 1789, an event that is celebrated every year all over France on Bastille Day. 2. Liberté, égalitié, fraternité meaning ‘liberty, equality and fraternity’ (or brotherhood) is the national motto of France. First appearing around the time of the Revolution, it was written into the constitution in 1958 and today you’ll see it on coins, postage stamps and government logos often alongside ‘Marianne’ who symbolises the ‘triumph of the Republic’.  The Parliament, made up of the Senate and the National Assembly, constitutes the legislative section of the government and is responsible for creating and voting on laws.  France is a member of the European Union, whose European Parliament is seated in Strasbourg, capital of France's Alsace region.  The French national anthem was composed in Strasbourg in 1792; the military song for the Army of the Rhine became the Marseillaise and was declared the national anthem on July 14,1795. France's motto is "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."

  8. DID YOU KNOW THAT....? In France it is prohibited by law to create and collect any statistical data concerning race or religion. Therefore, questions such as "How many Blacks in France?" ,"How many Protestants?" , "What is the number of people of Arab origin?" or "Where do French Jews live?" have no statistically official answer. It is prohibited, under heavy penalty, to keep any such individual data on a computer file and the CNIL (Commission Nationale Informatique et Liberté) has huge powers to investigate it. The reason for this is in the vision the French have of their own identity : anybody born in France is (automatically) French and becomes identical to all his/her compatriots, whatever his/her origin. No discrimination can be made, based on the color of the skin or religious beliefs and no such community can be officially acknowledged
  9. Punctuality is treated very casually in France
