The summer day
The poem describes a grasshopper that the speaker finds fascinating and questions who created nature and all its creatures. It reflects on spending the day observing the grasshopper and being idle in the fields. The speaker asks what else they should have done with their day and what the reader plans to do with their one wild life.

Over the day, Tom got all the neighborhood boys to whitewash parts of the fence in exchange for various items, allowing Tom to sit back and watch while collecting treasures. By the end, Tom had three coats of whitewash on the fence from the boys' work.
