14. ECLAMPSIA
β’ Eclamptic seizures are a significant cause of mortality in pre-
eclampsia, and complicate 1-2% of pre-eclamptic pregnancies.
β’ Intracerebral haemorrhage and cardiac arrest are complications
β’ Magnesium sulphate is first-line therapy for treatment .
15. MANAGEMENT
β’ The patient should be turned to the left lateral position
β’ Call for help
β’ Assess and support Airway, Breathing and Circulation
β’ High flow oxygen by face mask
β’ Obtain IV access
β’ Treat with IV magnesium sulphate.
β’ Monitor ECG, BP, respiratory rate and oxygen saturations Ξ±Ξ½Ξ΄ Οheck blood sugar .
β’ Repeated seizures not responding to magnesium sulphate, consultant obstetrician and anaesthetist decide intubation and transfer
to intensive care .
β’ consider CT scan to exclude other causes
