Crispin lives with his mother in their small hut until she dies, after which he flees into the forest and hits his head. The next day he emerges to find his home being destroyed by John Aycliffe and others. Later, Crispin finds Aycliffe praying in the Castle of Great Wexley, a nicer home belonging to the wealthy Furnival family, after his own hut was torn down and burned.
